Re: 1964 Mercury M700 truck

Beautiful truck, you did an outstanding job. The color combo, the visor, air conditioner, Mercury emblems, its all so perfect. And your Comet, really nice '64 you have. The best year for the Comet IMO. What a combo. Very Impressive!

Michelle, no I'm not a member yet, I should probably sign up though. The Vancouver Island chapter puts on a great show every year in Duncan BC. This year was at the Forest Museum so everyone got to ride around all day on the steam train if they wanted. This was the first year I've had something fixe...

This isn't a CS but it is to me. I used a '65 CS as a parts truck for this one, and plan to make a truck box trailer using the CS box as it has the side toolbox. I will paint it two tone to match the 4x4. The camper is a '67 Galaxie Eldorado with turquoise interior that kind of matches the truck. ht...

Even if you had an overdrive, once you engaged it, the rpms of the engine would fall off below 2600 rpms, then the converter would be slipping again. Am I correct on this? I've known a few guys that had high stall converters in street cars but they never drove worth a damn. BarnieTrk is right, get r...

I am planning to do the same thing with a truck I have. Mine is an F250 with a full floater, so I can pull the axles, cut them off and cap off the axle again, so the gears don't turn for less rolling resistance. Then I planned on putting a hydraulic surge brake tongue hitch on it and hook it up to t...

Michelle, that sure is a beautiful truck you have. I had somehow stumbled upon your website a few years ago, (which is very good, btw), looking for some Falcon info I think, and had admired the truck and the rest of your collection then. Your rig would sure look great with some old fords or tractors...

I used thin aluminum sheet, .026 I think it was, I used spray glue on the aluminum after cutting it using the original plastic one as a template. I wrapped the vinyl over the edge, and I was able to get the original trim over it, but it was a tight squeeze. I would say that it is important to use th...

I know a guy who used to work at a refinery, he said that when they started the "ethanol blended" lines of gasoline, that's what really killed the shelf life. He said that today's gas is "going bad" less than a month after you buy it. Worse if you add oil to the fuel like in a tw...

Some guys used to put supports from the cowl to support the overhead bunk of the camper. I actually have a set of chrome ones in the original box if anyone is interested in creating a "period correct" camper special with all the accessories.

wow, 200 blocks!?! If he went to the effort to have them magnafluxed before he sold them he could really stand to make some money. Good flathead blocks are getting very hard to find because they are notorious for cracking in the valve pocket areas. Many builders put aluminum heads and intakes on, so...

The nice thing about propane is that it doesn't "go bad" like gasoline. Great for vehicles that sit idle for periods of time like motorhomes. I've had lots of my stuff on propane over the years, a '67 Cougar, early Bronc, IHC Travelall, motorhome, and a few 70s F250 4x4s. The Bronc even st...

Good discussion you have here guys. I have also heard the cast iron "S" code 390 intake which is taller than the regular 390 intake is pretty much the same as an Edelbrock performer, though as stated before you could anchor an aircraft carrier with one. Another point of consideration when ...

If the windsheild is out it will make it way easier. I took a thin strip of sheetmetal, aluminum if you have it, make it about three inches wide, and about 2 feet long, sharpen one end like a chisel and fold the other end up for a handle. You can use the handle to lightly tap on with a hammer. On mi...

Just take a length of 3/8 copper tubing and hammer one end down flat for about 3-4 inches or so to make your own eastwood spoon and you'll have a handle as long as you want it to be.

The nail suggestion is a good idea.

Good suggestions on tires and rims - & they look great on your truck, but I think they'd be a tad too tall under my 2X4 '65. What do you roll under your '65? BarnieTrk  My 65 has 235/85/16, and you're probably right, the 255/85 would probably be too big, particularly on the front.

Those were developed for the corvettes in the 80s, parts are obsolete for them. They are a solenoid shifted gearbox, with straight cut gears, no planetary. Clunk when shifted. Apparantly quite tough though. The GearVendors units are nothing more than a Laycock planetary OD, an english design used in...

These are 255/85/16s, about 33" diameter. Tallest and skinniest radial I was able to find around here. The rims are off an early 90s F250, would have been nice to find some 16s to fit the "inny" hubcap, but they'll do.

Some useless info that someone out there might be happy to stumble upon: The 77 Broncos in Canada had a speedo that measured in kilometers and the numbering went up to 160km/h.
