How much horsepower??
I'm about to pull my 352 for rebuild but have been considering a swap for a higher horsepower Windsor. My question is, how much horsepower is really usable in a swb slick? In other words, at what horsepower point will there be silly wheel spin when I put my foot in it? As much as building a stroked ...

Re: Windsor vs. FE
Sounds to me like you want a truck that falls someplace between a V8 Mustang street toy and a truck. Something to cruise around in. Go to a car show/cruise night. Go out to dinner. Drive to work once and a while, maybe all the time. Etc... But nothing you plan to race regularly and/or competitively...

Re: Intake manifold ID, 2nd try -- smaller pics
Guys over at Boss302.com confirmed it's a factory tunnel port intake (yay!) but it's practically worthless because of the DIY hack job (boo!)
Oh well, fun trying.

Manual Transmission Upgrade -- Seeking Input
I have a '65 swb slick with 3 on the tree. I plan to retrofit a healthy 351W in the truck and would like to have a 5 speed manual for the overdrive. What 5 speeds are you guys running out there? I'd like something that shifts well, with a performance bent. More like a passenger car and less like a t...

Re: Windsor vs. FE
Hey Rich, good point about the 351W as a starting point. I have no opposition to them. Guess I was impressed with how light a 302 could be made that I overlooked the 351. Would be nice indeed to have the extra grunt/torque of a 351's cubes. Would the extra 50 pounds of heft be far outweighed by the...

Re: Windsor vs. FE
tjm73, I have a donor late 70s 302 in storage that appears to be a good core. I'll probably just rebuild it. I don't mind spending a few more bucks and getting some new aluminum cylinder heads. I like that aluminum heads and intake can shed 100 lbs off the front. I also like the idea of picking up s...

Re: Windsor vs. FE
David: Here is a thread, look @the third post by Steve (LM14), it discusses the 327/331 vs the 347 combo...... http://www.slick60s.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=35647 James That's a good read James, thanks for that. Everything I've read so far suggests the 331 is better for street use, my intended pu...

Re: Windsor vs. FE
Lower cost, reduced weight, horsepower potential... All convincing arguments to go to a 302. I called a local salvage yard who said he would charge $350 for an Explorer 302 core and the same for an AOD trans. Does that sound pretty fair? Not sure if that price was with the engine pulled or still in ...

Re: 352 cam selection
David, If you are going to go to headers, I would suggest you also outfit your starter with some sort of heat shield.... if not, you'll be cooking and changing your starter more often than you'd like to be..... review this thread: http://www.slick60s.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26179&p=225754&a...

Robert, what did you use to notch the header flanges? Some kind of grinding wheel?robertrpeak wrote:That is correct.orangeRcode wrote:You just notched the bottom bolt holes so they would sit down on the bolt shaft?

Re: 352 cam selection
The 265DEH cam is a stock 390GT/428 CJ cam. I am using it now, it has good low torque, falls flat at high RPM's and idles smooth, No LUMPETY LUMP CAM...sounds more like a well oiled sewing machine. Choppers, did you do other mods like headers and 4V, etc.? 352, correct? Do you think the cam would m...

Re: 352 cam selection
A friend had that cam in his '56 Chevy sedan with 350 and 4.11 gears and 4 speed. It flat out flew. Do you have experience putting headers on an FE? Local machinist warns it's a pain due to vertical bolt holes. Good luck with your build and I look forward to hearing your impressions. Are you coming ...

Re: 66 F250 project
Are you doing a 352 or 390? I'm new to FEs. I'd enjoy finding a 390 but fear the price tag. I'd have to learn too how to identify it from a 360.

352 cam selection
My 352 needs a rebuild. Hoping to stay mostly stock to keep costs down. Was thinking though of a cam upgrade like the comp cams dual energy 265. It's advertised to work with stock exhaust (which is appealing -- I have stock manifolds and duals), and provide strong midrange. So, would a cam change be...

Re: Intake manifold ID, 2nd try -- smaller pics
Its not a crossboss! What it looks like is a 2x4 thats had the center removed, for what ever reason... still not to sure on the round ports... Edit: looking pretty good for 302 tunnel port heads. I'm not to well versed with the small block Fords, FE's are my choice  It appears from what I can ...

Re: Intake manifold ID, 2nd try -- smaller pics
I did not find any other casting numbers. I noticed the bolt holes on top line up with a Holley 4V flange, apparently two 4Vs. The metal adapter for single 4V looks to be homemade. Those circular intake ports are what threw me off. Think it has any collector value?
