What length and type of Speedo cable will work to connect the factory Speedo to an M5R2? Speedo connection on tranny will be about 9" further away.
Any suggestions?

Re: 64' M5OD 5.0 install - whose done it?
Thanks Greg! Since we don't have any headers yet it looks like we have some options. 1- Use block huggers and install the tranny seperate from the bottom if we leave the current cross member. 2- Use long tubes and drop the engine tranny in together with the crossmember removed and do some alternate ...

Re: 64' M5OD 5.0 install - whose done it?
You want that crossmember right there or reconnected similar to mine. Holding the engine is only one of it's purposes. It's actually more important function is to tie the rear spring mounts together. Without it the frame will flex too much at the hardpoint for the springs - it will feel abit "...

Re: 64' M5OD 5.0 install - whose done it?
Thanks guys for the info. I got the master and slave with the tranny & ordered a new slave & bearing along with the shifter repair, seals, & freeze plugs to replace the rubber ones on top of the tranny today. I prefer to replace anything that would require pulling the tranny to do later....

Re: 64' M5OD 5.0 install - whose done it?
This is how I did mine. I used a rebuilt T5 I had but still. The M5OD will be easier to use a hydraulic clutch with. You will have to check the bore/stroke of the M5OD stock master but I used a brake master for a Slick for my clutch. My 64 is a 3 speed truck and I left the floor intact - have a few...

64' M5OD 5.0 install - whose done it?
Anybody done a M5OD install on a 64? I'm getting parts ready to swap a 5.0 M5OD in place of my sons 292 and 3 speed. Any tips from those who have done it would be great. It is his everyday driver so I want to get as many parts ahead of time as possible to minimize down time. (Code words for reducing...

Re: Y block starter wont work
Slapped in the new starter and the old 292 fired right up! It looks like the starter was the culprit all along. A good lesson that a starter that works on the bench does not necessarily mean it has the power to work under load on an engine!
Thanks again for the input.

Re: Y block starter wont work
Thanks for the input! As some had suggested, I had replaced all the ground cables along with the positive ones as well as sand down to good metal when reinstalling. One of our local auto parts stores that has a sole endangered real auto parts man thinks he may have found one for me he can have in fo...

Re: Y block starter wont work
is the ground from the starter to the frame clean? i think i'd get a voltage reading from the starter side of the solenoid to the starter positive when cranking and see if the voltage is even getting to the starter. i guess since you push started it when the key is in the on position your guages, g...

Re: Y block starter wont work
for what it's worth i just did a starter on my 64 y-block and the drive came in the extended/engaged position, i installed it that way and on first fire it retracted to the run position no problem. i don't think that has anything to do with your problem. i would think if the battery is good, you ju...

Re: Y block starter wont work
I will try a new solenoid tomorrow. New cables & checked for continuety at battery. Batteries are known good working in other cars.
Any explanation of why the starter won't work when the solenoid is bypassed and the starter is wired direct if it is the solenoid?

Re: Y block starter wont work
Are you just checking voltage on the battery or load checking it? You need to load check the battery. My money is on battery or solenoid. SoPark Load checking. Battery is also brand new but tried different battery anyway, same result. If it is the solenoid won't the starter work if it is bypassed? ...

Re: Y block starter wont work
Are you sure its not the starter solenoid on the firewall? those things are NOTORIOUS for failure... and dead battery can cause the solenoid one click as well. Since the solenoid on the firewall is the only one in the Y block I assumed I was ruling that out by jumping across the solenoid, as well a...

Y block starter wont work
I am sure I am probably missing something obvious but after searching I haven't found the answer so here goes. My son drove up in his 64 f100 292 and when he went to start it 5 minutes later all that happened is the solenoid clicks once. I jumped the solenoid and since nothing happened I figured it ...

Great to hear! I have read most of the stuff on Y-blocks forever and here in the 292 I could find. Good stuff & a fun piece of auto history to learn! I will keep the Y-block shoot out in mind.
Thanks again!

Re: Value of 1964 292?? Connect 3 speed to 5.0?
Thanks on the tranny insight. I assumed as much on the salvage yard bit hadn't checked yet. I red several posts about the T5 install so I if I get scrape the rust off my past mechanic brain and pull some hair out I think I can get it. We are located in Indianapolis, Indiana suburbs. Since he will ha...

Re: Value of 1964 292?? Connect 3 speed to 5.0?
Charlie, I hear everything you are saying. As for mechanical ability, I spent a handful of years with a muscle car engine rebuild shop specializing in Olds 442/W30 restoration that I got out of about 20 years ago. I was also a precision Aircraft A&P mechanic for a dozen years so the space shuttl...

Re: Value of 1964 292?? Connect 3 speed to 5.0?
Thanks for the info. As to the "why? 302 vs. 292?" thing. Being new to the older ford scene we have not motor allegiance at all. The point of stock for stock is taken. Which leads to the point of having no intention of leaving it stock. Since I do have an extra late model 302 it all comes ...

Value of 1964 292?? Connect 3 speed to 5.0?
My 18 year old son bought a 64' F100 shortbed styleside custom cab for his first vehicle, and for me to help him redue. He decided he would like to go with a newer 302 and sell the 292 due to the cost of adding dual exhaust & 4 barrel. Being totally new we have no idea what a running 292 sells f...
