Re: my shipwrecked '63

Pretty cool that you finally got to move it under its own power! That shift linkage can be a bear to adjust. I just watched your video and I’m not sure if I missed it, but it looked like you didn’t have the vac gauge hooked up? It can be a good insight into if your issue is a valve/rocker issue or p...

It’ll be a pain, but recheck your valve lash.

Re: Straight Sixin' '63

So that it will definitely fit I’ll make sure I park the truck in one of the bays, then cover it with stuff!

Re: Straight Sixin' '63

Well I adjusted my brakes today for the first time since I got the truck. Surprisingly everything was still pretty good. The wife and I are closing on a house next month and the truck has to be ready to go because it’s gunna get loaded down. New house has a two car garage so I’ll be able to comforta...

Re: Straight Sixin' '63

Man you are getting serious. Replacing throttle shaft bushings are a pain in the rump!! Good to see that the parts and changes you are going through are making improvements. Sometimes you just get one that has a bad attitude and you have to show it ALOT of love Lately this truck has been DEMANDING ...

Re: Solution to carb problems

That is pretty cool, but I could eat the cost of three freshly rebuilt autolites for that price without trading in the cores :dontknow:

Re: Stumbling dying engine under throttle 223

Well this thread has gotten a bit off topic, but I dropped my pan. Had a bolt back out of the pump and the other ones were finger tight. https://i.postimg.cc/rsSgxcHs/E87EC50D-5F5F-4B22-8174-735E23D56917.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/dQd5zm0F/BC116534-F272-496E-8DED-CBC31BC56B80.jpg The bolts don't have ...

I couldn't read the dipstick cause it was so warn when I got the truck. So I marked where 5 quarts was the first time I changed the oil.

Edit: I'm still going to drop the pan and check the oil pump.

Re: Stumbling dying engine under throttle 223

Well this is embarrassing, but it appears I've been running my 223 a quart low forever. According to the shop manual it takes 6 quarts of oil with a filter change. My uncle always put 5 in so that's what I've been doing. Big Oops

Re: Stumbling dying engine under throttle 223

Thanks farmmotorsports. I should probably check that, it’s making me a little nervous too. It’s not a bad job. It took me about 3 hours to drop the pan, switch the pump out, and reinstall - and that was being slow about it. Worst part was torqueing all the pan bolts to spec...

Re: Stumbling dying engine under throttle 223

Got lucky, put a half quart of oil in and the oil pressure is 10psi hot at idle and 32psi hot at 2k rpm. Maybe the ‘64 oil pump sits slightly different than the ‘63 and before? Or maybe has a different flow? Either way, all seems good, for now.....

Re: Stumbling dying engine under throttle 223

Well I spoke too soon. Must’ve just been a coincidence because the problem returned. Tried the carter out again and the problem went away. I guess at this point it’s something with that Autolite. Anyway I got ‘er tuned in and went for a spin. Thing ran like a dream. Then half way through my loop the...

Re: Straight Sixin' '63

My stumbly issue has been solved! Thanks for the input from Slick4x4 and Mr.Jones. It ended up being an accelerator pump circuit issue. I rebuilt the autolite 1100 that does not have a SCV. The accelerator pump circuit has an internal check ball. I didn't know this and I added a check ball (upper re...

I guess if it walks like a duck? Lol. Strange that my Carter YF’s accelerator pump is also out of adjustment. Maybe I’m just terrible at accelerator pumps? :dontknow:

Re: Stumbling dying engine under throttle 223

Hard to diagnose It was confusing, but I seem to have solved the issue! I checked for vacuum leaks again today and didn't find any. I noticed a carb whistle at a very specific idle RPM. I think it was just the way the air flowed through the carb with the cleaner off but to be safe I used some RTV s...

Stumbling dying engine under throttle 223

My engine is dying under hard throttle. Sitting in neutral the engine idles totally fine. Slowly press the pedal and it will rev up fine. If sitting at idle and I punch it to the floor it instantly bogs down, misses, and then dies. If I quick give it half throttle, let off, and then punch it, it wil...

Re: Straight Sixin' '63

Installed a new coil (ironically an Accel Mr. Jones lol) and now have strong spark but the same overall issue. I noticed a crack in my distributor cap. A new one of those is on order and we’ll see if that clears anything up.

Re: Straight Sixin' '63

Thanks for the input Mr. Jones. I hate dealing with coils. I’ve had them test good and be totally shot lol. I wired the resistor wire back in and gapped the plugs down to .040. Runs a bit better. Plugs were black and sooty. Spark looks to be orange. The coil was a cheapo from rockauto from 4 years a...
