3 bolts and a cable nut
1/2" socket, ratchet and medium extension

should be a ground cable too from one of the starter mounting bolts to the frame, a lot of times they are gone or not hooked up.

any more than 1/2 hour time and your milking the job :P

no.
you just head out there, start working, find other things that need to be done on the truck, do them too. 3,4 hours whatever as long as they are productive hours.
not necessarily every day but enough as so you keep steady progress and do not get distracted/sidetracked.

bear in mind, and this is from someone with no kids, that even when your wife is at work you will still be disturbed in some fashion during slick time. visitors, phone calls etc.

have fun and remember the important stuff:

Just a thought? sometimes if the weather is cold enough the battery looses some of it's umff? or starter get's froze up?
I have heard of such things happening up in the frozen tundra ? just saying cold weather and batteries don't always mix

Like Ice says, piece of cake. all the bolts are half inch, and you can get to all of those easily except the top one. I use and extension for a 3/8ths drive and a qukarter inch drive slightly longer than the starter. Make sure the post for the battery cable is tight before you crawl under the truck to install the starter. You may have to hold the starter cable to break that nut loose. You don't have to disconect the battery as you have the starter selinoid between the hot post and the starter. If you were familiar with it, and knew what tools you needed, it's a fifteen minute job. Be sure the ground goes back on. Only problem with a yblock is the seal between the starter and block. These can be a pain, and most likely has been deleted by previous owner. Breaking in a new one can be problematical.

I have the battery out, I had it hooked up to a charger but it didn't even register. Ill take it over to be tested. what kind of seal is it...like a gasket? or just a seal from being bolted on for so long? sorry all new to me.

It's a rubber seal. I guess to prevent crud from getting into the bellhousing.

think i have seen 2 or 3 rubber seals on all of the y starters i have removed. have not had one on my 4x4 in 10 years and no issues with the starter.

Snow, wth is that?

Looks like we dodged winter in GA. I've had to wear a jacket 3 times. Think I'll wash the Jeep today and take the top off since it's going to be 64. Haven't washed it in 4-5 months.

Handiest and cheapest aid to doing this job is a oversize piece of corrugated cardboard. Works better than any creeper, rugs or contraptions I've tried. Catches all you drop and insulates you from the ground with a slight cushion, (for my old bones). Slide in, slide all the parts and tools out when you remove and slide em back in when you're ready to reinstall.
Seems pretty obvious maybe but you might try it next time.

I haven't seen the one on the right in any Y I've taken apart yet but that doesn't mean it's incorrect. I understand that Early FE starters are similar enough to work on a Y. Maybe that is what it is? Does the tooth count match?
The one on the left is not retracted. It looks like the one on the right is, at least partially.

its just a different bendix, the one i sent you will work fine.

a special note:
do not grab the starter by the bendix gear, twist or otherwise play with the gear as it is supposed to be out by the end, not up close to the motor like the one on the left otherwise its harder to get in place as it will be contacting the flywheel teeth in that (engaged) position.

good to know, thanks.
I also notice while under there it appears I only have one motor mount insulator on the drivers side and nothing on the passenger, it seems to have never been there, or wasn't put back in? this uni is mess up.

ok I got the new one up there, and the top stud into the hole and the other lined up after that, do i assume I have the teeth lined up right then too? it was all I could do to just get the holes lined up. the gears were all the way out to the end like brian said and not up to the motor so I hope they fell into place.

is there a way to check to see if the teeth are lined up before trying to start it?

You can remove the dust cover to look.

Concerning the bendix, from a post on Y-Blocks Forever:

"Let me guess. You were playing with the starter before you installed it and got the drive gear into the 'crank' position, and now it only ratchets one way and won't retract. That restricts the room you have to work with. When I run into that, I hold the starter teeth against my spinning wire brush on the bench grinder so that it ratchets. If the brush is large enough and fast enough, the starter drive will retract and help tremendously when you install the starter.

well i hooked up a battery after I got the starter in, and turned the key....and the fan blade turned, It didn't fire, but since the fan blade turned I assume the starter is at least working no? Im so new to this, sorry for asking basic questions.
