Door Rubber Issues.

Post by Lightshow »

Alright, this problem has vexed me for the winter months and it's got me stuck. I have a 1965 F-100, and we got it without any door rubber. Doors fit fine, but were, of course, very noisy when shut, opened, driven, etc. We live in the general vicinity of the LMC warehouse and haven't had problems with any of their other parts we got, so we went and bought door rubber from them, which I now know has somewhat of a reputation on this site :? . We installed to the best of our ability, and the doors wouldn't close. We tried rehanging the doors, which helped, but didn't solve our problem. We've tried repositioning the rubber, regluing, shoving harder, etc. to no avail. Here's a link to an album with some hopefully helpful pictures:

I guess my big questions are should we cut the rubber down thin enough to fit? Re-rehang the doors? Honestly we're both stumped at this point.

Not a cheap solution, but I would remove the LMC crap and buy a new set from Dennis Carpenter, They mold their own Very Nice Quality, Remember to wash / clean the new rubber to get the mold release off so the adhesive will stick better. :2cents: add some tape to hold the tricky spots untill the adhesvie has cured

before you trash the lmc rubber, try some spray silicone lubricant on them... it might help soften them up a bit.

i have read it works.

I would return them to LMC for credit. Looks like not molded correctly for the doors. I bought mine from BOB'S F-100S in atlanta'ga. Or buy from Dennis Carpenter in N.Carolina. Good Luck, have patience installing rubbers. tony

We tried to return them, refused because they were installed. Silicone lubricant helped but didnt fix it. Dennis Carpenter seems to be a popular choice for door rubber.

I have a set of LMC door rubbers sitting in my cabinets. I installed them with spots of adhesive so I could remove them after the body work was done. After about 7 months, the rubber never did set in any better and I still had to slam the doors to get them to shut. After the truck was painted I bought DC door seals and now if the window is down just a little bit, you can give the door a slight push and they will shut and latch completely.

ok, before I learned so much from this forum, I bought a set of seals and door rubbers from Obsolete Auto in OK city. It's been in the box for some time now maybe a year. Is it the same useless stuff from LMC or useless from overseas, etc. I have the anti-rattle kit and the rubber for the vent windows as well. Send it all back?

Anti-rattle kit seems o.k.; but the Obsolete door rubbers I purchased were (and are) just like the description of the LMC's. I like both vendors, but am finally realizing there is a definite advantage to supporting the vendors who have "been there, done that", and stand behind their products. The cheaper pricing is not so cheap when I will have to start over with a quality product!

The quality parts usually do have good prices. It is the general perception of a good price that is flawed. Which would you prefer? A part that costs $200, lasts 20 years, and is a relative breeze to install, or a part that costs $50, is a pain in the a$$ to install and rots in a couple years and so needs to be replaced every 2-3 years? Not saying that everything is like this, but for the most part, it is the difference between the cheap budget part, and the expensive quality part.
A test, tell me, which one is the better price?

I didn't say cheap, I said good. I buy quality stuff and don't mind paying more for good stuff that will last, I don't need a lesson or a test to know that.

I know the door seals and front/back rubbers on cab on my 56 Truck is all Carpenters bought back in the mid-80's and still on the truck with no issues... my 66 wrecker going on now 7+ years no problem and my Mercury Truck going for 4 years now,, In the past couple of years I see people buying that Junk whether it's rubber, poor fit bumpers, etc...for one main reason is they are doing it to keep the truck few months after finishing it and then resell and let the next person deal with it,,, :( ..
