1966 Ford F250 4x4 cab swap

Post by pm042070 »

Hi guys! First time post. I have a restored 1966 F250 2WD camper special with a 460 engine, C6 transmission, US gear over drive and Classic Auto Air A/C that I would like to transfer over to a 1966 F250 4x4 chassis. I would like to keep the original 4x4 fenders and fender wells and transfer the remaining 2WD cab clip, hood and bed along with the drive train over to the 4x4 chassis. I realize that the cab mounts are different on the two cabs and wanted to know if the 2wd cab clip would transfer over to the 4x4 chassis and bolt up to the original 4x4 fenders and fender wells by installing the 2wd cab mounts on the 4x4 chassis. The 2WD cab is in great shape and has more room than the 4x4 cab. I realize that I will have to get a floor shifter for the C6 and will have to move the divorced Dana 20 transfer case back to accommodate the C6 also. I just hope the 460 w/ headers will fit into the engine bay and the 2WD cab clip with mate up with the original 4x4 fender wells and fenders ok. Has anyone done a similar cab/bed/drivetrain swap like this? Any advice that could be offered would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks!

having done lots of 4x4 conversions i dont recommend this due to the amount of work required to put a 65-66 2wd cab on a slick 4x4 frame.
the 61-64 cab, 61-66 f350 cab and the 4x4 cabs except the 66 f100 4x4 cab are all direct bolt ons with no steering or pedal issues.
even a uni is a direct bolt up.
theres also the wheelbase difference meaning you cant use your bed without modification of bed or wheelbase.

one note from above is that the tc does not need moving with the correct short tail truck c6, also its not a d20 but a d24, the 20 is the single speed (no low range)t case used in the 66 f100 4x4.

if you wish to convert to 4x4 with a 66 2wd cab and bed your best option is a 67-72 f250, you can go up to 79 my preference is the earlier years due to axle and t case.

Thanks! It looks like it will be a restoration project from square one instead of a utilization / swap of existing work. Thanks again!
