240 to late-model 300 swap--anyone done this?

Post by Oregoon »

Hello all,

I have a line on a '90 4.9 with 107K on it. Bone stock.

My 240 is kaput, so I need to swap in an engine, and this one comes with a limited warranty.

My truck is a cruiser/daily-driver, not a go-fast truck. That said, should I advance the cam, or leave it in it's stock location? I'm running a DSII and a Carter YF at the moment.

I imagine the carb will need to be re-jetted. Anyone have any idea where to find Carter YF jets?

Looking to keep this as simple as possible.

What else am I missing? I have thick skin and a thicker head, so lay it on me!

Thanks for the help.

It seems like a lot of places list the 240/300 carb kit as the same, so it could be possible that they used the same carburetor I suppose.
Dunno if this helps or not but I swapped out my dead 70 something 300 for an 86. I have it set up with duraspark II and the old carter yf and manifold and it runs pretty well. I don't see why you couldn't do the same.

i swapped out a 240 for a 300 in an old 65 i used to have and it wasn't no biggie . i used a fuel injected motor with the carb stuff replacing all the fuelie stuff. had to get plugs for the head for the smog junk . the hardest thing i did was putting the electronic ignition on it. used the carb off the 240 and it ran good. Nolan's carburetor in Spokane Wa might have the carter jets.
You would need to know what size your current jet size is.
Then figure out how much bigger or smaller you need.

Probably run find as is..

Did the efi block have a spot for a mechanical fuel pump? I did a 5.0L carb conversion and I had to put an electric pump in..

Thanks for the info everyone!

Going to take some time and do some research. The '90 wasn't worth it--tired and neglected.

Going to bicycle to work, save some coin, and decide how and when to build a long-block.

For now, bodywork shall commence.

All things in the fullness of time.
