Pulling a trailer with 240 6.

Post by Pack Rat »

Anyone here pull a trailer with a little 240 L6? My truck is just a 100 stock with floor 3 speed conversion. I have a small camper I built to pull behind my Galaxie.Want to use the truck to pull it this fall to haul gear in the back. Trailer probably weighs 1200 pounds. No brakes. It is basic with place for storage and 2 beds.

It should be fine pulling that trailer. The 300 6cyl. is a good torque monster. You 240 will be slow but still get the job done.

I pulled a similar trailer with my 66 that had a 300 for 10+ years. Give your self extra breaking space, make sure the brakes are in good shape and take it easy. Takes longer to stop so be careful. That said have a lot of fun. these trucks are work horses.

Your main limitation will the top speed you can attain....not whether the 240 will pull it. It's a torquey little sucker and will easily pull it along, it just may not want to run at interstate speeds.

So your choice of roads/route will be more important than anything else.

If you could swap out the tranny for a four or five speed, that would help you get moving.

Ok sounds good. Will take it on short drives. Just redid front brakes Saturday and installing a power booster this weekend. 4 or 5 speed in future. not sure which yet. First trip will be less than an hour. Galaxie pulls it 80 mph no problem. 8)

That trailer is awesome looking.

Did you use a set of plans or just create it from scratch?

I bought the empty shell on ebay and then made it mine.

I need to do exactly that.

My boys want to go camping in something pulled behind my 66....something vintage looking. And, we wouldn't care if it was bare-bones inside, as long it kept us warm and dry.

It is mostly a bone inside. I have the power inverter from the pop up and the lights. I ran 4 outlets and a 12 power port to charge battery. I have a battery under the seat. The back bed can be a table but I eat out side. Front couch pulls out to be a bed. I bought a new B grade dorm size fridge. No toilet or running water. A/C was a face book find for 50 bucks.
