Sources for new body fasteners

Post by 66CCTWIN »

I'm almost ready for final assembly of my 66f-100 frame off restoration. The old fender bolts are pretty rusty and a lot of the nuts/ clips broke at disassembly or very rusty, does anyone make a fastener kit or offer new factory type fasteners for the fenders and other front end sheet metal? A set in stainless would be nice. Thanks

What size do you have? I need some 5/16 24. I broke some of mine getting the grill out? I can't seem to find any 24 thread, 16 thread are readily available.

i had no problems with finding fine thread bolts but you need to go to a fastener store or good hardware

also in 65 ford switched from fine to coarse thread bolts so unless your going to have a concours inspection or replacing fine thread bolts in places like door hinges i would not worry much.

Absolutely no worries on the concourse stuff, my issue is finding the 24 thread extruded u-nuts because I have most of the bolts just some broken u-nuts, if I had to cut them out then I'll replace those with coarse. Be nice to have them all the same so you don't spend an hour trying to put a coarse thread bolt in a fine thread hidden u-nut but I don't want to go buy all new coarse thread, maybe I'll draw a map of whats in each location! Maybe not!

Checked all 3 Ace Hardware stores in my area, no 24 thread u-nuts, 16 only, looked online and didn't find much online either which leads me to believe they aren't real popular. There were a few options online but not much.

sounds like a deal

many years ago my brother worked in a hardware warehouse, accidents do happen and stuff gets spilled on the floor and they dont repackage.whatever the workers picked up after sweeping the floors was theirs. he gave me several boxes of "junk". pita to go thru and sort and there were lots (too many imo) of metric stuff but the goodies made up for it.

Looks like a candy store!!! :D So you do have the 24 thread (fine) u-nuts? Also, are your bolts the tapered tip so they start easy in the u-nuts?

Well...... here's my excuse, I have a few that broke, the majority are all still fine and hidden away under this or behind that in their little hidden worlds. I'd like to keep them the same so I don't have to remember which ones are 16 and which are 24.

In my mind if you mix them and snap in a hidden u-nut with a 16 thread you have to remember which one it is so you aren't struggling with your arm bent and twisted through the grill getting cut by the razor sharp edges, complaining about old age because you can't see anything within 4 feet of your face because your eyes are becoming victims of time, while finger tip trying to start the bolt into a nut that you pray is still there but can't see and then after trying for an hour you realize this is the one that is a 16 thread and you are trying to start a 24 thread bolt into it.

If I change to course thread I think I'll just change them all out so they are all the same. Truth be known I'll probably never take it apart again so it probably makes no difference and yeah who cares but hey my mind doesn't work that way and the next guy always appreciates it even though he has no idea, right??? That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!! And it will help the resale....I think, cuz I can say the grill will be easy to take out because all the bolts match, oh hell the grill will never be easy to take out no matter what any of us does who am I kidding!

I think you'll be hard pressed to find them in 24 thread, if you need to change them all out I'd just give in and go with the course thread.
