a funky electrical gremlin

Post by ICEMAN6166 »

a long time ago i installed led taillights and got clear lenses for my original taillights and wired them up as backup lights with a switch under my dash.
the backup lights always worked fine until last night when i discovered turning on the switch that instead of the backup lights coming on i got 1 taillight and 1 running light on the drivers side. i had a ground issue a while back with the drivers side led light which i fixed or thought i did as the light was working.
guess im going to have to take apart the lights and harness and see wtf is going on.

Did you figure it out? My money is on the grounds too.

once again it is proven that most electrical issues are
ground related

apparently the bed metal does not wish to be used as a ground anymore so i now have a ground wire from the frame to the bed.
i used a stock ford engine to firewall ground wire and all is well again.

It's weird how that happens, I don't get it either. The bed contacts the frame metal to metal somewhere surely?!?!
I had the same with a small box trailer recently, only way I could solve it was use the ground through the lighting harness.

Those gremlins be everywhere!

my bed is starting to get rusty, especially the lower back area below the lights.
my frame was POR-15 coated about 14 years ago, not sure how the bed ever conducted a ground very well.
the POR- 15 is coming off in places now too, and of course theres rust in those spots. :cussing:

Last year or so issue when I stepped on the brakes, they were lighting the taillamp circuit, added a braided strap from the bed to the frame, all is good now.
