What's the correct procedure for setting the dwell,240/300.I did it with the dist.cap off and cranked the engine over,made the dwell adjustment by moving the points slot.That throws my gap off,I don't get it.

Yep, no problem, as long as dwell is correct, cruise on! Don't forget to recheck timing and idle. Maximum dwell = minimum gap, so normal procedure is to set to mimimum dwell to allow for wear.
