For those that know, I need to know.

I have a lot of play in my drag link on my 66 4x4. mainly in the funny early style ball on the pitman arm it seems. This arm goes into hole and has a screw in thingy on the end of the drag link . I presume this is to be able to tighten the thing up on the ball. Not ever having had any experience with this adjustment, thought I would ask someone about it. I could drag out several books and read up I suppose thought I would ask here first.

Another little thing I was looking at was the rubber seal on an 351w pan. The pan has a ridge at the ends that I suppose the rubber part is made to fit on. Looks to me, that it would be very easy for it to slide right off that ridge and slide out. Any special insight on the proper way it's supposed to be done?

been a while but i think theres a groove in the bottom of the timing cover the seal fits into, same thing with the rear

i do not remember there being any screws on my wifes 66 f100 4x4 , i replaced the gearbox (manual) at one time and would have noticed adjustments there.

heres the post i made at the time

As we all know, things sometimes get changed around out of someone's not having the right parts. Could be maybe? I will get my books out and see what I can find out. At least I will get those books out, if I can find the right ones.

As to the rubber seal, you are most likely right, as with the rounded raised hump of the end of the pan, it would be extremely unlikely it would have stayed in place otherwise.

Thanks Ice, I knew if anyone had the answer it would be you.

Well, I'm thinking the drag link and pitman arm may have been changed out on this truck for an earlier model . I've been looking at the parts book and it's clear as mud, as to what is what. my Ford 65 manual doesn't seem to be of much help either. Pictures and illustrations don't shoe me much from what I'm seeing. Looks to be your right though and it should have typical tie rod type ends going to the pitman arm. Will keep digging , time for me to get out the junkyard bible.

Well it seems the power steering models used the ball and cup but I have manual steering.

Take a look at mrgoobs 5th picture shows that link same as mine [F250 4x4 ] my set up is the same with adjustment at pitman arm end, pull cotter pin and snug in, turn play in wheel while snugging and grease it up good. I have not had to adjust this truck but my earlier ones 51 & 52s had screws on both ends, quick and easy.

Thanks Steve, basic idea as I thought, but never having done the adjustment on the old style connectors with the screw I thought I would ask. In 66 the steering box was changed and moved to the front of the frame. According to my interchange manual ( which stops at 69 ) the box interchanges from 66 to 69. It may be, that the interchange would go on up into the 70's, but I don't know for sure. According to my Ford parts book, it appears that ball and socket was only used on power steering, and the standard non power steering used a drag link with two standard type tie rod ends, although it was all one non adjustable solid piece. At least that is what is shown in the pictures. The PO installed 17 inch 275 tires on the truck, which I feel certain is a mistake as far as wheel alignment and wear on the tie rod ends, etc. . Truck steers fairly easily considering the huge ties. What is also surprising, is that it does not have a lift kit. You cannot haul anything heavy in the bed otherwise it cuts the tires on the rear axle as the tires don't clear the wheel wells on the inside. He did however install fiberglass front fenders that have a wide flair for turning on the front, but that does not stop the tires from hitting the frame occasionally. The young man I bought the truck from apparently had big ideas and tried to follow through with his plans without the aid of someone to advise him on what not to do. The motor has way to much power for the truck , and a fancy serpentine belt system with aluminum pulleys, and he had a vintage air system installed on the truck. He also had these fancy racing seats installed and a special locking center consul box with built in stereo. The motor is more suited to a Mustang or something other than a truck of this kind. Built very well with lots of goodies, just not good thing the way he set this truck up. Like I said big ideas and apparently no reasonable advice on what was good and what was bad. Would have been better with the 300 six for my purposes. Lots of poor judgment calls and a ton of money spent on it.
