Heater core removal

Post by 66camperspecial »

Touched the heater hoses and one is hot and the other is cooler so its plugged,I do not think I have any manuals for my 66 so what is all involved in replacing the heater core.

Compared to a car, its simple you actually have some room to work. Disconnect the hoses at the firewall, the defroster hoses, the cold air inlet duct, take the switch out of the dash and disconnect the wire going to the ignition switch. Now you have three (I think) nuts on the firewall in the engine compartment to take off and you should be able to take the whole unit out to get at the core.

you shouldn't have to take the switch out, can't you just unplug the harness on the blower motor? I just replaced mine and didn't remove switch or wires at ignition.

I you think one hose is plugged? then first try removing both hose ends from the engine and or water pump side. then just hook up a garden hose and see if you can force some water thru it in both directions or you might try compressed air. This may loosen things up. And may make a mess if water comes shooting out! But at least you will know you may not have to remove the core. Then if the core isn't leaking no need to remove it.

Also, check the valve in the hose to make sure it is actually opening......

Just did this! Mine was leaking. Bought a new core off ebay and a heater box repair kit from Bronco graveyard. Two hoses, three ducts, one cable and two wires unplugged at the resistor. Three nuts on the firewall and it all drops out. Laid it all on the bench and enjoyed the hobby. Inside the unit I found a spring clip that baffled me as to where it went and what it did. It goes between the core and the housing and holds the core in place. Actually one of the more enjoyable projects I've done recently.

Took a heater core from my '65 F-100 today to Biltmore Iron in Asheville, NC and received $3.60 (3 lbs @ $1.20/lb). The radiator from same truck brought $18 (18 lbs @$1/lb). I run a '66 radiator now because i couldn't find a '65 around these parts years ago, fits fine, i just had to drill some holes in the bracket to mount it.

2 Carbs from an Escort were $3.40 (17 lbs @ .20 cents/lb). Brake caliper from the Escort was 40 cents (Steel - $8.00 per hundred weight).

Had the stuff laying around for years, i can use $25.40 any day.

Compared to a car, specifically a Mustang, it sounds like a walk in the park!

I am definately going to check the valve first,I feel heat in the summer with it supposively shut off so it could be stuck partially open and will investigate this weekend.
