Front parking lights help!

Post by Tigger! »

Hello all!

So here is my situation, I just noticed that when I have my parking lights on they work fine. That is, until I pull the switch all the way out to turn all the lights on and then my front parking light turn off. The turn signals work fine.

They use to work fine.

Does anyone have an idea what might have happen?

Thanks.

Well, without a doubt, that's the first time I hear that when all the lights are on the front parking lights turn off.

They use to work before. When all the light are on both front and rear parking lights turn on.

Yep, my two '65s operate just as ' jkimbrel65 ' and ' aarons428 ' does.

I have read where guys have RE-WIRED their parking lights so they do come on with the headlights, but they made the change, it was not that way from the factory.......

They go off with headlamps 'on'. I used to know, I think 68 or 69 that was changed to stay 'on' with headlamps 'on'

Think about this, why would you need parking lights with the headlights on? You really can't see the parking lights with the headlights on and it's just a drain on your electrical system you don't need. If nothing else, think of what the statement says, parking lights. If you want running lights before the sun goes down, turn on your parking lights, but your sending mixed signals that way. It says I'm parked , go around. :?

Here is the story. I have a 69 Marauder with the same set up. You can jump wires at the switch to fix this. You can "search" posts and you will find out how. The reason is parking lights were not mandated until 1968. Hint look at 1967 Cougar and Torino then compare with the following year.

Parking lamps were mandated to stay illuminated with the headlamps effective with 1968 models under the same statute which required side marker lamps and head restraints (on passenger cars). This may have been an attempt to help identify road position of an on-coming vehicle with only one headlamp working. Some European vehicles had these features well before then.
Column mounted dimmer switches? Don't know what caused that change, but it sure made it hard on some of us, especially Aggies!
