Muffler Question??

Post by Mr. Jones »

I love the sound of 5.0 Mustang with good exhaust, any way to get a stock 352 to come close to that sound???How about adding a cross over or X-pipe?
Thanks,
Dan

I have a Power - Flo (looks like a super turbo on the inside with no packing and weighs about 40 lbs.,lots of steel, 2 in 1 out) on my work truck, 94 F-350, 351, and the guys at work say it sounds like a 5.0 'stang. I asked if it sounds weak and underpowered and they just laughed and said no. Nice burble, not loud unless you're on it. Thinking about a couple for my 406, but I like the glass packs that are on it just fine.

Here is an old video of my truck with its Flowmasters. Since this was taken I installed a crossover and it does indeed sound quieter at idle and more 5.0ish under acceleration. Sorry no video of that. I also have headers and a small cam.

Dan,
I'm wondering how difficult duplicating the sound of 5.0 into a 352 (or any FE) would be. Imagine fitting the 5.0 exhaust on a 352, with headers of course, and comparing it for sound. I'd bet that it would still sound different given the differences between the two engines. I've got a new exhaust system on my stock 352. I got some new Flowtech Afterburner mufflers for free (from a brother), Hedman Elite 1 3/4" headers, 2 1/2" pipe, an 'H' pipe that crosses over the driveshaft and it exits out the end under the bumper. I like the sound, it has a healthy burble at idle and I could mistake it for having a performance cam given the exhaust note. It is relatively quiet in the cab and at cruise and I am happy with it.
