Carter YF-1 barrel,Couple questions....

Post by Mr. Jones »

Will be installing this on my 300 soon,my first time with a Carter. This photo below the pencil shows where hot air enters the choke case,my exhaust manifold has no port for a supply line. One question is where should I drill and tap to install the line? And the large washer below the carb, what purpose does it serve/

My best guess for the washer is this....

Right/Wrong??
Hoping someone out there has one of these set-ups on their truck.Need to get it on this weekend.
Thanks,
Dan

On my 69 GTO that went to a (heat riser tube)in the exhaust cross over passage.
One side to the fitting, the other to a port near the air cleaner. Providing clean heated air to make the choke turn off. If I remember right the choke housing is tapped to manifold vaccuum. And will naturally draw thru the brass fitting.

The tube in the crossover was just a loop of tube. About 3" long. If all else fails, copper tube wrapped around the exhaust will work. Be sure to restrict the flow (vaccume leak). As for the washer, I believe it is correct in the back of the housing, it's a heat sink, to prevent the quick cooling of the spring and heavy choke on a restart.

Powerstroke,
The heatsink makes sense,thanks..another question...should the bi-metal spring receive hot air directly from the manifold,if so.What size tube and length? The vacuum part you mentioned I don't think applys to this carb....maybe,I just don't know
Thanks,
Dan

Do you really want the most primitive version of automatic choke that ever existed? You are trying to implement it!!

Those suckers were nothing but trouble. There were aftermarket conversion kits, you might find one at an old parts place or on eBay, that gutted the bimetallic choke spring and allowed you to have a manual choke. Find one.

The Carter is a decent carb, for a 240 or 300. I like them much better than the Autolite 1101. Have both.....

My first post in like 3 years.... Was checking on SlickStock16

I was/am a bit of carb guru once upon a time. Lately, as of last 6 years or so, my truck is mothballed in western KS (only 100 miles from Salina) and I am forgetting more and more every day.....
1965 F-100 240 Autolite 1101, Disk brake dual master upgraded, swapped over to C4 and powersteering. Bought by my Dad new in March 65'

1683

Planned/considered upgrades:
Perhaps power brakes, 300 I6 motor and JUST maybe, AC!

If you do use it, the fiberglass rope seal is the way to go.
