66 F100 Headers 4x4

[Trouble]

Hello all

Trying to find some headers that would fit my 66 F100 4x4. Has a 390 in it just a bit worried about ordering the wrong thing with clearance on a 4x4.

had some on the wifes 66 f100 4x4 w 352 way back, not sure what they were as they were on it when we bought it.

66 f100 4x4 is different from all the other slick 4x4s in the fact that it has the 65-66 2wd cab and front clip so theres no inner fender issues

I've got a set of FPA Tri-Y headers on my '66 F100 4x4 - they are quality pieces and I'm very happy with them.

Further clarification: Header application is dependent on head exhaust flange bolt pattern, which can vary according to the original application. If the 390 was originally in a truck, flange pattern should be the same from 352 to 390.

block is stamped 352 and the heads have 8 bolts on the exhaust sides.

Them Tri-Y's are nice but didn't really want to spend that much.

The 8 bolt is the common head. Some performance heads had 14 or 16 bolts and were arranged slightly differently.

Look at Sanderson's web site. They will not list a fit specific header but they make a few different shortys for FE's. I have the FF427 on mine and they tuck tight to everything. May or may not clear all the 4x4 stuff but worth a look.

Buy the best header you can. The thicker the flange the better off you will be. Stainless is really nice and worth the money, too. Cheap headers will be nothing but a headache. Starter clearance is always a problem with an FE. Consider some heat shield wrap for the starter.

This is a link to my build. I used the flow tech long tube block hugger headers that you are looking at for you 66. If you follow on thru my build you will see how close they came to the front drive line. The place I go to for all my exhaust work was able to cut the collector on the end of the header and angle it away from the drive line to get a little more room. I have done some light offroading with no ill affects so far. One thing I would suggest if you get these headers make sure you get a good heat resistant paint for BBQs or wood stoves and repaint them. They will rust right away if you don't. Another thing to do is recheck you flange bolts not to long after they have been in use. They will loosen up and maybe warp the header flange if you don't. I would get a anti seize and put on the header bolts too. I installed mine with the front clip off so it was easy and had to use a little hammer persuasion to get around a few odd places. I had a few install problems that you will see but nothing that was not to bad to overcome. Again you are going into a different 4x4 than mine but I hope it gives you an idea anyway. Im going to let mine probably rust out and purchase some better headers. More than likely some shorty block huggers or something. Have to see when I get to that place.

after reading these replies I would favor the FPA's because of the testimony that they fit without modification and also because of the quality. Many of the inexpensive headers can't withstand the abuse in a 4 wheel drive application. i have some Hedman Elites and they are a very rugged header with 3/8 thick flange and are relatively short for a long tube header for ground clearance i suppose. these cost just over $400 and are ceramic coated, just don't know if they'll work on a 4 X 4. Jegs and Summit carry them. The Sanderson's look expensive as well and are an interesting design with plenty of starter clearance. Header leaks that result from inferior quality will drive you crazy, spend a little more and forget about them.

I have some stainless headers on my 66 4x4 but off hand I don't know the brand. One suggestion is go with a ceramic coated set. Ceramic helps keep the engine heat out of the engine compartment and away from the starter to some extent. If at all possible , get ceramic coating inside and out of the headers.

dont put your glasspacks or cherry bombs under the cab, can get a bit loud, i did not install the ones i mentioned but i would have put any muffler farther back

They are over $500 now.

I want to find a set of coated headers that won't break the bank. May be a pipe dream.
