How do you supose this runs?
Re: How do you supose this runs?
Deutz is a name you don't here very often. I would be afraid if anything went wrong parts might be hard to come by. Have no idea what the age of the engine is nor what it came in originally. More than likely it is turbocharged but doesn't say. Deutz sounds German and usually they make good stuff. Would be fun to test drive. I've always wanted to install a 4BT Cummins in one of our trucks for an everyday driver. Should get about 20mpg with a 4BT.
Also note that the Deutz is air cooled, not certain of how that would work out in stop and go traffic. I've been around a couple of these and those ran OK but really did not pay any attention to particulars . Now that I think about it, I seem to remember these are made in France possibly Italy and not Germany, even though the name sounds German.

Probably be a good effeciant engine
They have a fan, so stop & go not a problem
But no water for the heater in winter
I could live with an off breed such as this....

Re: How do you supose this runs?
Deutz are industrial engines a lot of them in bigger generators and compressors
they are pretty stout.
probably has lots of torque not sure where the top end would be, likely dependent on gear ratio
bet it might pull a small train

I had a Deutz in a Hamm roller compactor. They have a great reputation and are a tough engine. They are still made today.

I have a 5 cyl turbo Mercedes diesel that I thought about putting in one. But the torque and hp is so much lower....

Re: How do you supose this runs?
For me its not how they run but whether you can stand the noise. I just finished moving my sister from CA back to OH in a diesel rental truck. Truck was easy to drive, but the noise level was exhausting. I know I would have never got the close to 10 MPG for a 13 ton truck if it was gas, but this convinced me that I'd never want a diesel. The engine was loud enough, but when the cooling fans kicked on they were even louder. And it still could not maintain speed up almost any incline.
Re: How do you supose this runs?
I have a multitude of pics of the rat rod, I will look them up. It was air conditioned as well as air cooled. He evidently drives it quite a bit; it was at Ol' Marais after SS. The Duetz are a durable engine and really not that noisy. I am not sure of the horsepower on the five cylinder, but it is probably a little low for a 3/4 ton.

Re: How do you supose this runs?
I remember that Rat Rod too Tom. Took some pics of it as well.
The guy who built the car did some pretty cool things in the build and
it was the first time I had ever seen an air cooled diesel engine. Did some
research and found out they make those engines in larger versions like
V8s, V12s, etc. Never heard it run but was a cool built rod.
Builder was definitely thinking outside the box. TR

Re: How do you supose this runs?
Just walked over to check the horsepower on the five cylinders. They've been replaced by water cooled Juan Deeres! I'm thinking the fours were about eighty hp. , so a rough guess on the fives would be a hundred (although they may have different displacement ranges).

My go-to shop for the force-fed industrial 460/532s also are Duetz experts. I may pick their collective brains as to suitability for light truck usage.
