taillight modifications

Post by ICEMAN6166 »

not that i have enough to do i come up with another nutso plan, i think will look cool but the process may be tricky

i ordered some oval LED lights i want to use in the unibed
similar to these except i got clear lens with red LEDs

one came the other day
lit it up with a battery and i like it

now for the fun part
i want to mount it in the existing taillight aSsembly

anyone want to try cutting a 6 1\2 x 2 1\4 inch oval hole in the plastic uni taillight lens, i have one real old looking and one brand new lens, guess i try the old one first though im thinking it could be more brittle. thinking about taping them up ,scribing the lines then using an air cutoff wheel and then some smaller stones and a 1\2 round file i might possibly manage to not break them

anyway the idea is to use the red factory lens to cover the remainder of the hole band also help hold the LED in place

still going to need another new lens too for whenever the other light shows up

I would hole saw the 2 ends and cut straight lines between the holes. Use a drill press and run slow.

Are these multi- function, or are you planning to use the existing bulb for one function? If the LEDs are multi-function, you "may" have a problem with bleed over unless ballasted/ resisted. I used Amber multifunctions at the front, I like them, but want to go with white to be less obtrusive.

they are stop\turn tail however i had LEDs in the wrongbed, but since they were the only ones, as the top of cab lights being regular type, there was no bleedover or any other problem.
i though about and have the correct hole saw but i think the teeth are too big and few, not sure if i could get one with very many fine teeth,

well going to town today so well see what i can find that works

Keep us updated on how these install. LEDs are superior in amount of light they put off with minimum draw.

The average hole saw is not accurate enough for the accuracy you probably want. I'd use the next size smaller and then a dremel with a flap wheel to open it up.

LED tail light. I did them in my uni. First step is to go to the NAPA dealer and pick up oval stop / turn LED lights. Cut the red lens off the LED lights with your cutoff wheel. I though going though 2 red lens was to much. Using the same cut off wheel cut off the back of the original tail light housing then using seam sealer mount the oval LED into the tail light housing. Works great. Only problem is you need to ground the LED.

1st step is wrong i will not shop at competitors
i do not have a red lens on the LED lights, they are clear lens with red LEDs however i did try them both with and without the uni lens in front, definitely brighter with no lens hence the idea of cutting the lens to fit the light
also grounding is no problem as i had LEDs in my previous bed

made a joke about napa, been doing it for years never thought about it

everyone wants or does something different ,i have no issues with how you did your LEDs
actually some pics in hints and tricks and some text and part numbers would be cool if you had the time to do it

Brian, mine in Lenore are LEDs, all I did was, I got a LED light like the one you have, and, fitted that in the bucket hole and mounted it in there so it sat just behind the lens, then just fitted the lenses over them, works great ..

photobucket down at moment

Any progress on the taillights Iceman?

I am interested in this. I feel it's a safety issue, and the brighter the brake lights / taillights can be the better.

I would also like to see ideas on adding a third brake light.

Pics would be great from you guys that are doing or have done this (Alan, pcola60).

Thanks

Sorry Gary, I don`t have any pic`s showing the parts as I installed them, just a finished photo, the little horizontal clear lenses are my indicators, which were done the same method but with amber LED`s....

Indicators are the turn signals, then? So red taillights are lights/brake?

Clean rear end look, Alan.
