It will probably be different in your state, but in Indiana, you start with a title search to see what comes up. Start with your BMV, and do what they say.

Good advice. There should be a VIN number somewhere on the truck, obtain that and head to the DMV. They will talk you through the process.

Check local BMV. Some states such as Georgia only require a bill of sale if a vehicle is older than a certain age.

Busboy,

I hope you received a receipt or can still get one for your truck purchase.
You should take it with you to the DMV when you go.

If it turns out that the truck was stolen years ago, it may open a can of crickets that you can't re-close.

Keep us posted as to how it goes for ya........

I recently had a title issue. Went to get my title changed over and ended up having to take my truck to my local tag agent for a vin inspection. My title showed 1 letter different than the vin on my door. They had to go back and research in some boxes of microfilm somewhere in the recesses of a state building somewhere. The OTC decided that it was a typo (back when titles were typed up using typewriters). The corrected title in my name is supposed to be on its way to me.

I advise everyone to know where the VIN is on their truck or trucks. Let me assure you, that door tag is not what you think but is only a warrantee tag. Title actually goes with the frame on these trucks. There were changes made about title and VIN numbers and actual title VIN numbers and location. Know our states laws regarding title and VIN Otherwise you can end up in a mess.
