auxilliary gauges

Post by SLICKCOLLECTOR »

i installed a pair of auxillary gauges in the non-custom cab dash. the wiring harness i used has a large black wire, a large black wire with yellow stripe, white wire /red stripe, and a green wire with a red stripe. i assumed the green/red wire was common to one side of both of the gauges but apparently not. does anyone know where this wire is supposed to attach, the gauges are an ampmeter and oil pressure gauge. i know the white/red wire goes to the oil pressure sending unit. were those gauges lighted on a factory install on the custom cab dash? thanks.

Jim
the gauges were lighted, bulb sockets plug into existing dash light harness, blue w red stripe.
is it possible this is the one your saying is green

black and black w yellow are the ammeter in\out i can never remember which is which i think the striped is in

there is a black w green sttripe that hooks up from the instrument voltage reg to one side of the oil pressure, red\white is the other

all of the extra wiring for these are plug in pieces

i may have some pics of these i will look

The ammeter uses a junction block. You basically run all the truck current through the gauge, except the starter. Your battery positive should go to one terminal on the solenoid. One of the ammeter cables also connects to the same post. The other connects to the other wires that were on that post. Originally there is a terminal mounted to the inner fender (65/66 not sure 64 and down) where these were connected together. Until I found such a terminal, I just used a bolt and insulated the s*** out of it. White and red is for the oil pressure, one end to guage one to the new sender unit, other terminal goes to guage power from the instrument regulator. Hope this helps.

taken and used several of those add on harnesses over the yeaRs
seems to me there was a wire taped up in the harness that was not used
may have been green, not sure but i can look and see as i did not use the oil pressure wires and taped them up.i have both the idiot light and a mechanical oil gauge

thought i had some other pics

theres some info here and theres no real difference the electric oil pressure gauge is the same hookup regardless where its mounted and the ammeter has
terminal ends instead of a loop and one long wire.

here you can see the jct. block to the left of the starter relay

In addition to your tach and oil pressure gauge, I'd also suggest a coolant temperature gauge and a fuel level gauge.

I am no electrician, but I think a Volt meter would serve you better as to the status of your charging system than an AMP meter would; but neither one is really necessary. :2cents:

my idiot lites work. got the oil pressure gauge and tach working yesterday. lites even. then started tackling assembling the doors. i hate that job. my vision and manual dexterity is not the same as it was but i finally got the division bar in and the wing window rubber on and installed in one door. it takes me 3 times as long as it should but i perservere. one door i will have to remove due to an LMC weatherstrip installed on it. the other has a dennis carpenter weatherstrip on it and there is a world of difference which is not readily noticed until you install the door. the DC door fits right and installs easily but the LMC door will never close right and fit the door frame right no matter how long you try to adjust it to fit. the money i saved by using that cheap ass s**t cost me several hours work and a hell of a lot of paint chips on my freshly painted and assembled doors and fenders. i had intended to use the softer rubber but did recognize the difference prior to installation of the weatherstrip and the door installation on the cab. unless you value your time at greater than a $ an hour and don;t care what your truck looks like and don;t care if your doors fit or not and don;t care if you have huge air leaks around that door frame where the cheap weatherstrip won;t seal don;t buy that cheap a** s**t. now i have to remove the door and remove the 1/2 tube of 3M weatherstrip adhesive i used to put that ill fitting weatherstrip on and install the right one and reinstall the door. lesson learned the hard way. i would boycott LMC all together but it is 20 miles away and easy to return that crap.
