I made my coon ass mind up

Post by *motor*mount* »

I'm going to try a hydraulic clutch in my 64 with the 3 speed and the 223 6 cylinder. Any suggestions?

No suggestion, just wondering why? I've always thought the hydraulic was a step in the wrong direction. Nothing gets improved and you may introduce more chances for failure. Just my opinion.

Jim
I read your other post that you said you had a stroke
And your left leg didn't work very well....
You were considering an automatic for your 223
I have several trucks with hydraulic clutches
To me, there isn't a big difference in the amount of
Power it takes to push the clutch pedal.....
Before you make the swap, I would suggest you
Find a truck (57-60 ford have hydraulic clutch)
And see if it is suitable for you
"...............
I have read on the Internet about guys converting
C4 transmissions to bolt up to 223 engines
Probably costly..... But it has been done

I did not put the two posts together before. I can see that you might have some trouble finding an auto that would bolt to a 223 and you are looking for an easier pedal. I wonder if you could add a booster to a hydraulic clutch?

there are auto trans available for the 223 and y blocks
more likely to find one in a ford car of that vintage then a truck maybe

personally i would go with something like this

I googled 223 trans adapters and found the link from Ice above and one other. Both are pretty expensive. Mummerts (ford-y-block) was around $800 and the other was around $900. I think an auto for a 223 would be pretty rare. Is it time for a complete driveline upgrade? This may be a faster/easier/less expensive way to go.

Not sure how impaired the stroke left you, but the hydraulic clutch like the manual clutch can be modified with a lighter spring. the hydraulic takes less foot pressure to activate.

That answers the question I asked him. Does the 223 have a 6 bolt bell? Wondering if a small block zf would bolt in. Would need to electronic speedo.

If you can find a hydraulic clutch conversion for a T-5 then it might be worth considering Mummert's kit for that. It involves modifying the existing bellhousing rather than purchasing a new one so it might work out to be cheaper in the end:

I remember the 57 ford i once owned had a breakover spring under the dash to help counteract the clutch springs. Don't know if something like that would help in this case or not. Might take a bit of work to adapt to your truck.

To a 300 six maybe, but to bolt one up to a 223 you'd definitely need a pricey adapter.

I don't know if you solved the problem yet. I was cruising Mummert's site (www.y-block.com) and noticed he has a trans adapter for a 223 to a C4.

I don't think he is into responding. I told him there was a 62 6 cylinder auto south of me but didn't hear back. I'll be down that way again toward the end of the year if anyone else wants me to look at it.

I think bruceanderson had a great suggestion when he wondered if a brake booster could be used with a hydraulic clutch. Packaging concerns aside, it could make for a very light clutch. I can't think of any reason why it's not doable.
Also, a T85 overdrive trans does not need the clutch to shift, at least around town. That would at least cut down on the number of pushes on the pedal.
