390 and C6
Well - I may have gotten in over my head. I saw a 390 with a C6 on Craigslist last week and couldn't help myself. I'm not sure what condition the pair are in, but figured for $300 I couldn't go too wrong. I bought it from a nice kid who is going to put a Vortec engine in his '69 F250. His dad had a nice looking '64 Slick 4x4 project in the shop that he got from Nebraska.
My dilemma is that even if I work all winter, spring and summer on my truck, it may not be ready for SlickStock next August if I try to swap motor and trans. If I just do rust repair, front end swap for PDB and some taller gears in the rear end, then it should be driveable by August. The power steering would probably need to wait, as my '78 F250 parts truck has an automatic/tilt column that would be needed if I swap to the saginaw steering box. (anyone have a 4 spd column for the saginaw PS box?)
I won't be doing my own engine work, so I'm not sure what size check I'll need to write - that may dictate when it get's rebuilt. I'm not in a big hurry to get everything done and I'd really like to go to SS, so I guess I probably answered my own question.
Open to hearing other opinions!

no one at slickstock cares if you actually drive a slick there or not
in fact there are several of us who for whatever reason never had one there
its not a big deal so dont stress on it

I hear you loud and clear, MN66. My dilemma is that if I spend enough time and money on the truck so that it is pretty much guaranteed to make it there and back, it will still look like a rusty hunk of junk. Can't do both the body and mechanicals and have enough cash to do the trip. I hope Iceman is right!

I have made all of them starting in 2004. All with no truck. This time I am planning on bringing my 66. If something happens that I can't bring the truck, who cares, I have proven I will have a wonderful time. I would like to suggest working on what you got and putting the 390-c6 swap until later. Corey, people bring trucks in all phases of builds, from rusty and crusty
to full on show trucks and we love them all. Going to be a little farther for
you next year to get to Salina than it was from Minnesota to Iowa, but as
Brian, Dan, Lyman and Mike said, it is Sooooo worth it. I have been to 4 of them from
2008 to the present and wouldn't miss one if I had to walk there. Fortunately I
am pretty close so it wouldn't be too far to walk. (No freakin way I am walking).
If your truck drives ok and can make it, bring it. Believe me it will be fun.
If not, come anyway. Guarentee you will have a great time. TR

Thanks for the responses. I'll be in Salina, Lord willing, I'll be driving my truck!
I assume that at least some of the Iowa contingent will be driving down to Salinas, maybe I can catch up with them and caravan from there.
I plan to start working on my truck in November and will start a project post with pictures and lots of questions for everyone, I'm sure.

I've been to 2 different ones. Never had a slick there.
It's as much about the people, friendships and "sharing of knowledge" as it is what you drove. Pat's jokes, the night shift, a family reunion will all make sense once you attend.
If you are lucky, you can see liquid run backwards thru an Australian's head. Must be because he was upside down from normal. Can I get a witness....... Pat?
