spare 223 I6... should I?

I pulled my engine the other day and will be doing a tear down on it soon(mine is from pre 59 as it has a two bolt valve cover). I was surfing around on craigslist and see an add for a complete '60 223 for only 200 and free delivery to my area. The guy posted a video of it running too. What you think? jump on it? He dropped the price from 500 to 200 over the last month.

This is my current engine. Don't know much about it but it came out of a 57 I was told.

lol. that is a Nyco toy I got off epay a while ago.. and a "shipwrecked" GI Joe figure I have had since I was 5. It's sitting on the top book shelf of my living room

I called the guy about the engine and he said he had someone already asking about it- but not confirmed. I gave him my number, name and my availability if he was willing to sell to me. He said he doesn't believe its been bored over (mine has .040) so if my engine can't go any bigger, I could use that block. If I get it, i have room in the garage for it and will figure out what to do with the rest of the stuff when I get to that.

the 2 bolt valve cover is not a good indication of year as i have had 63s with the 2 bolt cover, im thinking the later cover was 63-64
either way the head could have been changed sometime in 50 years

when I got the truck, the guy I bought it from said he pulled this engine from a 57 (I think he said car) but I am drawing a fog in my brain. Anyway- he had the trucks original engine in a big pile on the floor of the garage. At the time, he said he would throw the original engine in the bed(for a fee) but I said no- as the bed looked rotten thru and I had no where to store a spare engine at the time. I sort of kick myself for it now. But whatever- that original engine I am sure got scrapped a long time ago when he sold me the truck. He scrapped a Ford Fairlane (64?) too- I suspect to pay the court fees I found out he was having to pay for his issues.

Anyway- I decided and made a deal with the guy on craigslist to go get the engine today after he gets off work. The worst thing that could happen is I have extra parts

Im headed up to EHT (Egg Harbor Township) to go get some more chassis saver paint. Oh and a Harbor Frieght is there too- may stop in and get some consumables (gloves, air line, tarps etc).

Doesnt sound like a bad deal at that price. Maybe you could add headers and a performance intake and carb.while the engine is out.

Can't go wrong if it's stock bore. Although RockAuto does list pistons for the 223 at up to 0.080 oversize. Not sure one would want to go that far over, but it does appear to be a possibility.

One thing I have read (although never personally confirmed) is that the passenger car heads yielded a higher compression ratio. So you might want to use your existing head if it's from a car.

Agreed with Iceman's earlier comment re: the 2-bolt valve cover. The 223 had a 10-year production run with lots of interchangeability of parts, so mixing and matching of components seems pretty common. My '62 also had a 2-bolt valve cover when I got it, but the block had a rebuild tag from a local machine shop. So I really have no way of knowing what was actually original.

I went and picked it up today. As far as condition- hard to say yet. can't find any rebuild tag on it- so it may be stock bore. its got different mounts for the front, but those are removable.

When I read the add on craigslist, it stated it was stored for the past 5 years. It showed pictures of it in a garage, and then also the video of it on youtube. So- sure I will come get it. But what I got was the engine under a tarp in a junk yard area of a mechanics shop. So we shall see how bad it is.

The block looks better- as in the freeze plugs are intact, the rocker arms move, and its crank moves when I turned it around to get the clutch and flywheel off.

Either way- I am going to look into both engines to see which is best to rebuild.

I take it those are the 57-60 truck mounts. I'm not sure if there's a difference in water pumps for the Fridges and Slicks, but I know that using the earlier passenger car water pump and pulleys causes interference between the front mount and the fan.

Sure looks like the 223 that I pulled from my '57 big window. Same mounts, exhaust manifold, carb, etc. Mine didn't have the mouse nest clutch option, though.

Hahaha the micecapadeds have ceased. They aren't welcome at my house as my diesel dawg will catch it. I will drop the pan today to check inside.. The fuel pump hole in the block was wide open, so you never know!
