Post by 66camperspecial »

I will be getting a chrome rear non step bumper from a 67 to 72 to put on my 66 and wondering what brackets to use since it does not have any,do I use the 64 to 66 brackets or ones from a 67 to 72.

May have to make your own. I think the 67 and up frame is wider

64-72 REAR Non-Step Bumper Brackets are ALL the same, frame changed on 2wd in 1973

At some point they went back. The rear bumper on my 94 4wd came from a 72 2wd. I no longer have it to measure, I believe it was 32". Sometime next week I'll see if my neighbor will let me measure the rear of his 79.

I think your right. When I swapped front I beams from a 73 there was something about the 73 drag link where I had to use the 65.

Correct me if I am wrong, Tom! Talking 2wd, the front bumpers, with correct brackets where needed, fit from '64 to '79; while the rear (Stylesides) fit thru '72 as stated. The rear part of the '73 frame was widened, as well as the rear end and front track width. '73 up rear sport bumper looks the same but mounting holes are spaced 3" wider. '64/'72 rear bumper brackets bolt up to the '73 up bumpers, but are 3" wider than the early frames, requiring the use of 1 1/2" spacers.

Frames did get wider,, BUT On some 73/early 77 4x4 trucks had the same width as a 64-72 trucks < 34" >,, frame widths , Now on 73-79 < 37" > trucks you cannot uses the 64/72 brackets unless you re-drill the holes for the brackets BUT that is a problem since the 73-79 frames have a big nut welded on the inside since the gas tank is there and cannot get in there with a nut and bolt,,, < one way to over come that is by leaving your tank out, drill the hole for brackets, then install tank >, that is on 73-79 trucks

I have used several of the later bumpers, off F-series and '78-'96 Broncos on the '65-'66 trucks (see avatar).

I have always used the early brackets and bolted them directly to the bumper. I have found the only difference between the narrow and wide frame bumpers to be the distance between the bracket mounting holes. About 3", the difference in frame widths.

The brackets will be about 3" too wide to fit the early frame IF the bumper came off a 37" frame truck. In this case I typically use 1 1/2" x 3" square tube as spacers (1 on each side) between the brackets and frame. I drill holes in the 1 1/2" tube to match the brackets, and insert tubing or pipe into the 1 1/2" tube to run the mounting bolts through. The pipe, or tubing, acts to keep the 1 1/2" tube from collapsing as the bolts are tightened.

Hope this helps.

You were right, my neighbor's 1979 2wd frame is 37 1/2" wide. I used the brackets on my 94 that came on it. Apparently there were spacers on it that I didn't know about. From the pictures it seemed to fit the 72 body naturally.
