Piston rod cap bolt stripped :x

Post by shipwrecked »

I was taking out the pistons in the Orange 223 and one of the nuts is just spinning on that cap bolt. Will deal with it tomorrow. Nut splitter or just cut it?

Everything else didn't look bad. A tiny bit of scoring on the #5 piston bearing and a ring on #6 literally flew off by itself as I pushed the piston out of the cylinder.

Another option you can try ....
Snap on to it with a pair of good vise-grips
And pull (pull hard) and turn at the same time
It might 'jump on' the threads & start Unthreading

Or put a pry bar under the vise grips and apply pressure while turning

Can you turn the crank a bit and get to the head of the rod bolt? If so, hold the head with Vise Grips and break it loose. There isn't that much torque on those nuts, should be fairly easy to do.

Another option would be to wedge a screw driver or small chisel between the head of the bolt and the cheek of the throw, just be careful not to get into the bearing surface.

3rd option. Use a good fast impact wrench. Sometimes they will turn faster than you do by hand and cheat the nut off the bolt.

Good luck!

I tried putting a vice grip on it and pulling upward on the nut to see if it would jump onto a thread. It didn't work. I tried everything... didn't work.

So I cut that B-&ch off.
