Is it normal that my brakes don't have the adjustment lever? Just the bottom spring holds it at the length it was installed at. It looks like this
1962 9" brakes - no adjustment lever
Re: 1962 9" brakes - no adjustment lever
Can't see that working at all without the adjuster screw. As the brakes are applied the hydraulics plus rotating inertia all work on the secondary side of the upper pin. Now, if you are referring to cable and lever SELF-adjusters; it did not have them, although they can easily be retro- fitted. Some of the early slicks used a single action cylinder; same effect, hydraulic pressure forced both shoes against the secondary side of the upper pin, aided by inertia.

This is a good pic showing the difference of the primary & secondary shoes
Different is in pad length.... Longer pad goes towards back of vehicle...
I have seen every combination possible tearing into brakes....
Backwards ... Two primary's on one side of the truck
The secondary's on the other....
Get em right... Makes a big difference !

A lot of earlier cars/trucks did not have self adjusting brakes. They would get adjusted along with the valves and points replacement on a regular basis.

Were the single action cylinders used on the rear as well? I haven't torn into the rear brakes on my '62 but I do know that the fronts have the single action cylinder.Toyz wrote:Some of the early slicks used a single action cylinder; same effect, hydraulic pressure forced both shoes against the secondary side of the upper pin, aided by inertia.

Yes, but I have no idea what criteria determines which vehicles got the uni-servo.
