Instrument bezel glass goo or glue

Post by 65COOL »

Hello i have been working on getting my instrument bezel cleaned and polished. I put it all back together and the glass is loose. There was some stuff that held it tight but it was rock hard and melted. So i cleaned it off. What do you guys use as a replacement for this. Thanks wildbill

I used silicone and just glued it in. I have no idea what they used originally.

I bought an 1/8th inch thick O ring big enough to fit the glass trench

I'd go with Johns idea, even if you get an O ring that is bigger, you can always cut it down to the right size, then glue it back together.....

I agree Allen, exactly what happened my first time, but did not need to glue it just cut it to fit, the pressure from the glass is enough

I believe that rubber was what that was on the glass. O-ring maybe , but I've seen older rubber act like this, kinda melt then sometimes harden depending. I went with making a ring from a flat sheet of foam from walfart's crap section. I also use those sheets for other seals in the cab, such as the back side of the vent door. Have you ever noticed the vent lets air in nearly all the time. Had to have been a seal there at one time, If not it's needed.
This rubber is not quite thick enough for the seal between the kick panel and vent mounting . Something about an 1/8 inch that will compress better.

All three ways would work. I bet the original was some kind of o ring. But after melting looked like some kind of dryed glue. Now to find a o ring that size. Thanks for the help guys. Wildbill

Because I didn't want t ever deal with the melted crud again, I chose very thin cotton rope and Elmer's Glue.

That crud came with the trucks originally, was some type of mastic, its also on the top of window regulators, and transmission covers.
You can buy a seal tape at harbor freight that is light gray 1/8th x 1/2" wide that was used between body panels, vents ect. still used in trailers and motor homes today
