exhaust flapper Inline 6

Post by shipwrecked »

How do you remove the flapper assembly from the exhaust? I am going to take my exhaust and intake up to a powder coater to do a ceramic coating on it but don't want the flapper to get non-functioning afterwards. I wonder if I should remove the flapper assembly prior to bringing it up-

I've never took one apart, but by that pic
It looks like you remove tha cotter key (7201)
So you can slide the shaft out....
But after years of use....
I wouldn't be surprised if the flapper is stuck very tight
To the shaft...

April you will need to separate the exhaust and intake manifolds
in order for your guy to clean them up and get a good coating on them.
at that time it would be good to clean up the mating surface of the two
and remove the flapper. As Pat said it will probably not be an easy thing
to remove. After all those heat cycles it is probably stuck tight. Will take
a lot of penetrant to get in there and loosen it up in order to get it out.
Might be able to cut it out. After all, it is just a matter of getting it out
of there to avoid it sticking closed. I would be very careful with those bolts
that hold the manifolds together too. Might take some work to loosen those
little buggers too. Mix some Marvel Mystery Oil 50/50 with some synthetic
2 stroke oil. Mixed together they make a purple penetrating oil that is second
to none on getting into places. Dan Sturman (Bobenhotep) has been using it
for years on stuff and swears by it. He told me about it so I am passing it
on to you. Let me know how it comes out! TR

As a practical mater, the flapper valve has not held up with the years, meant to preheat fuel for better cold start performance, it usually rusts stuck, hopefully in the open position. I am pretty sure the SS valve plate is welded to the shaft, taking the fragile spring off is as far as you will get.
I do not think it will be an issue if you remove it, and plug weld or otherwise seal the shaft holes, except for a longer warm up in cold weather.

Look in the carb hole and see if it's stuck , if it's stuck and open might be better off not coating manifolds and leave it in and paint with some good high temp paint. Might be opening a can of worms with busted bolts or maybe manifold. Tom

Had zero problems getting the manifolds apart- except for figuring out how to take the flapper out.

Sorry I didn't post these earlier- I was having issues with Cell-Photobucket app.

If the flapper is moveable you could either tie it open so it can't shut
or cut the flapper and leave the shaft intact. I am thinking as long as the flapper
is in working condition it might be fine to leave it as long as you can check it
from time to time to make sure it is still working. Previous post I had said if it
was frozen solid to just take it out. Had an engine on another vehicle burn some
valves because of a flapper in the exhaust manifold that stuck almost closed. TR
