glyptal paint

Post by shipwrecked »

Guys- I was sand blasting the valve cover and oil pan for the 223 and noticed what appears to be glyptal paint inside them.

I don't know much about this paint, other than a quick google on how it is supposed to allow the oil to flow back faster.
$50.00 a brush on qt can. or $50.00 a 12oz aerosol. yikes!

I assume it doesn't matter does it? on the valve cover- it was mostly worn off.

paint the inside of the valve cover and oil pan with it or leave it blasted?
The months may change, but I am always APRIL

Clean metal will drain back just fine. What it was originally used for was sealing porous surfaces like lifter valleys. not much help on sheetmetal parts. I would skip it.

....and if it isn't properly cleaned prior to application, it will start to peel off (like yours is doing) and then chunks/peels will go down and plug up your oil passages and oil pump pickup screen..... not a good thing at all.

I'd highly suggest you simply remove as much as you can, and do NOT re-coat any of the engine interior surfaces.

April, I have seen people paint the valley on V8s with special paint for better oil drainback, but not the interior of the valvecovers.
Once your cover is clean inside I would leave it that way. TR
