This topic may have come up before.
My truck is a 66 F251
It has a GVWR of 4800 lbs
That is about what the truck weighs.
Truck has 8 lug wheels, 2 1/2 inch brakes and helper springs.
It appears to be exactly like the trucks with a the 7500lb GVWR.
My question is can the GVWR be changed?

I can't answer your question; I'm still trying to get a handle on this situation. I am not sure how a truck with a full-floating rear and the equipment you described can be rated lower than a comparable F100 with narrower brakes and a semi-floating rear. As you stated, I can't believe that would even actually meet Ford's described half-ton rating; pretty certain the truck is going to exceed 3800 empty!

Going back thru previous years; the F251 shows 4800/4900 rating all the way back to 1960???????

I do not know the specifics of the process, but I have had commercial trucks GVW increased by professional spring shops. You might want to contact your states DMV and see what they have to say.
