3 point seat belt upper mount

Post by shipwrecked »

Advise (pictures!!!) of how you installed the upper portion of the three point seat belt in the truck.

I have my seat in pieces and no padding but decided to put in the belts. I am going to be putting the truck in high-build shortly and want to be sure I have the hole drilled properly for the bolt.

I'm about 5'6" tall- not tall ~ average for a female. Want to be able to be comfortable in the truck for me to drive and maybe a guy around 6' tall. You never know who might take it for a drive one day. I'll add a photo of the sail in a minute. Plan to stage the seat out of the shed tomorrow after work and sit in it. Just curious how you all got it set up.

Yes I did a search- you guys don't post lots of pictures.

**And BTW: You must be careful when using jiffy markers on bare metal, or primered surfaces, as if any is left on the metal or primer, it can bleed through & show in the topcoat.....

April,
I can send you pictures of mine if you want, but more important is using a thick threaded backing piece with two bolt holes for the back side so the belt will not tear out.

I would suggest for placement if your seat is intact.. put it in the truck and sit in it while someone else holds the top belt mount to find what seems comfortable. The other thread listed above shows about the same placement as mine.

Also I did my mounting a bit lower tech than the article.I drilled the hole and ran a bolt thru the end of the belt hardmount, then thru the interior tin.. I put a BIG washer and a locknut on the back.. I have fairly thick fore arms arms and it didn't seem that hard to do.. Sometimes the idea is ok but the available room isn't !

I do always wonder how much damage would occur if you ever got slammed forward in the shoulder belt.. How much it would help the driver and hurt the truck corners ! It would have to be better than just hitting a steel dash without it.

I doubt we will get anyone to crash test for the info.. on purpose anyway....

I am 5" 10 1/2" or at least I once was my wife about 5' 6", I placed mine in between the first and second ridge about two and a half inches in from the door opening... any higher and you will run out of belt for those with ample girth. As stated, put in your seat, decide where lower attachment will be mounted that clears the seat then you can figure the top mount.

here is what I got set up now.

I took some 3/16"x2" steel and used the bench vise to help bend a curve in it. kept bending till i got the right curve.
Image

Took a fender washer, a 7/16"x20 nut and welded them together. then welded the fender washer to the piece of metal I bent.

In the position that I drilled the hole in the sail, I can fit my hand behind and hold the bracket in order to insert the bolt.

I bent some 1/4" flat strap to match the sail panel and welded a nut to it for the shoulder mount. I installed the entire piece behind the sail panel. This way in the event of an accident, it has to tear out the entire sail panel before it let's loose. You could do something like that and pop rivet the piece in place.
