Engine removal question

Post by btalley63 »

Hello All,
I've used the engine lift clamps that bolt on intake manifold on small blocks with cast iron intakes. Now I'm removing a big block with an aluminum intake.
Anyone ever have problems doing this? I have visions of the carb bolts being yanked out of the aluminum.

Thanks for any info.

I can't add a picture.

I pulled a 390 bolted to a 4spd ... No problems

Just be sure the bolts go in fairly deep

It's all I ever use. 460, 390, Cleveland, Windsor....even a 40 Lincoln. Never a problem. I use studs on the intake so I know I have full depth on the threads.

Steve is right
Don't use bolts, use studs
You get full depth and you can tighten the nuts down

I have used them on iron intakes. My Edelbrocks have been too porous for me. Even 1:500 odds of an aluminium intake breaking a porous chunk off is too high for my taste. In my opinion Offenhauser is the purest, strongest casting out there. I saw an Offenhauser FE dual quad fall off the bench once and break off the left rear ear, right through the the left rear bolt hole. Freak thing that it happened that way but so is a body part crushed by an engine.

Thanks All,
I went with Chris' thinking and got a big chain bolted to the heads.
Worked like a champ.
