Opinions on this 428

Post by MN66 »

I saw this on the Facebook FE site today and thought I would ask this group what their thoughts are. I'd be putting it in my 66 F250 with a 4sp, so I know I would need a new externally balanced flywheel. Also need to swap the 4wd oil pan, etc. I asked where the machining was done, and he said it was done at MPG Heads in Denver. Is anyone familiar with their work?

Any other details I should ask about? I assume the price of $3800 is fair if the parts and workmanship are good quality?

Care to comment?

IMHO i think the price is reasonable. fresh 40 bore 1010 crank 428 service block new badger pistons etc. unknown what is done to the heads. valve size? hardened seats? stainless valves? springs? camshaft?. but the price is reasonable irrespective of those mentioned. is the rotating assembly balanced? balanced to an externally balanced 428 flywheel. i assume it is from the quality of workmanship shown.

When I bought my freshly done 428...the guy had it done and had it balanced, I installed a stock flywheel and had all kinds of vibration, He never said how it was balanced... It was balanced to zero...I needed a zero balance flywheel, sucks pulling out the motor just to swap the flywheel.
Lesson, Make sure you get all the information....especially on balance, and on those heads, some shops will just cut the seats and never swap out to hardened seats.

looks very reasonable to me. i couldn't buy the parts and get that much machine work done for that around here.

Like CHOPPERS said find out. There should be a card or paper work with the balance and marks on the heads how much has been cut. If the sests were done right there should be all or no spring shims and all the keepers should be in a straight eye shot.

The risk with any rebuilt engine is not just what parts went in but were they installed correctly? Was everything pre-lubed, were the rings fit to the cylinders, .... I like an engine I can hear run or that at least hasn't had work I can't verify done. Just my :2cents:
