Defroster Ducts

Post by Michelle »

Have you ever wondered when or where the defroster ducts for your Slicks are painted? Probably not but I will tell you anyway. They are laid on the floor of the cab and painted when the cab is painted. Here is a picture of the floor of my cab when I was building my truck. You can clearly see the imprint of the defroster duct, a short distance over from it was the other one. Just a bit of useless information for you to think about.

interesting! There are a lot of little things they did I am sure that we have no idea of.

Wonder why the inside of the cab roof on my truck was not painted but others were.

I've seen them partially painted...
Makes one think they were "testing out" the paint gun...

The inside of my cab roof was pretty well covered with paint. There were a few places where the paint was pretty thin but all in all it was pretty much all covered. I do know for a fact that things were done differently at different assembly plants.

Painted? Ya'll mean your ducts aren't the chrome swivel ones?

I have also seen trucks with obvious markings of numbers letters written across the firewall that appear to be from the factory. If I recall correctly maybe 2-3 inches tall....

My truck has some numbers written on the firewall. Also lets not forget the big XL painted in the toeboard.

Found the XL when I was sandblasting the bottom of the cab. In 1965 XL= bucket seats.

I can never remember Ford's abbreviation for those daily sequence numbers, but they represent just that, a method for identifying the vehicles as they moved down the assembly line. As Michelle noted, certain letter combinations also could represent a vehicle with special equipment, whether RPO, DSO, FPO, etc. Kinda makes one wonder about those labeled "DST"

Interesting stuff! With the automation in assembly and scanners/barcoding all you see is upc or other scan stickers. Our trucks are time capsules of sorts.
