CV ifs 460

Post by RustNdust65 »

Happy new year everyone. I just put the finishing touches on the CV ifs and everything is good to go now it's time to focus on engine and trans.

So I had orginally planned to do a small block/ C6 or C4. Something simple and something that I know a lot of people have done. Well of course plans change (almost weekly at this point) and I ran across a 460/c6 for less then I paid for the CV IFS. So with a $250 460/c6 I'm now looking at the front end wondering if this is going to work. I know a few guys have put a 460 on the CV crossmember but will it really support this massive weight over an extended period of time? Regardless it was an awesome score they of course both need to be gone through but you can't buy cores for that price.

So would I be better off using the significantly lighter small block or just dive in and make the 460 work? I know this is a question of opinion but it would be great hearing from some guys that have put this much weight on the CV ifs. Thanks everyone

i have always read that the PI versions have heavier springs but as of yet i haven't verified that. i have always purchased CVPI cars and parted them out so i have not used the non-PI front suspension. also i read that you can swap out the springs for non-pi to add some weight capacity. someone will probably chime in who knows the difference. I have done a 460 C6 installation. the motor has PI iron heads and aluminum intake so is going to be a little under the stock weight. the truck drives and handles great. the motor mounts will require some fabrication but you know that. one thing that is important is that you find the right position for the motor to sit forward and aft and side to side. i used the 73-79 factory mounts and mounted a bare block and transmission in the frame in the factory position than set the transmission cross member location and built a jib for the side to side position before removal of the factory suspension. you cab firewall clearance is tight and if you are an inch off it could be a problem.

Ok I'll look into the springs. I'm sure every little bit of help from weight saving and overall capacity will go a long way. I had a plan to orginally do a small block and knew I was going to make some simple motor that just came right out of the CV motor mount pedistals but now there's to much weight so I'm going to have to integrate the mount to the frame rail. Thank you for your help Jim I'm sure I might have another question for you further down the line
