Help with 292 Oil Level - Dip Stick is Wrong

Post by SteveCanup »

I have a '64 F-100 with the 292 and I just gave it an oil and filter change. I put in 6 quarts of fresh oil and I drove it about 40 miles and parked it. That was 2 days ago. This morning I checked the dipstick and it is registering at the "Add" line. I am not sure this is the right dip stick for my 292 and this is the first time I have noticed this. Am I correct on the proper amount of oil with a filter change, that it's capacity is 6 quarts? Is it possible that the dip stick has been changed out at some point with the wrong one? What is the proper length of the dip stick? Mine measures 24 7/8". Any help would be appreciated....

The 292 that was in my 64, has had mane oil changes before it croaked and I did an engine change.
I always put 5 quarts and a new filter, and it registered right on the money, every time.

But who knows, mine could have a wrong dip stick too.

The oil level is correct. By all accounts the 292 takes 6 quarts of oil with filter change. I used heavier Delo 15W-40 this time and some of the oil is probably still 'up' in the engine vs. draining back down to the oil pan. My dipstick was registering about 1/2 quart less than full, thus about 8 ounces of oil was probably still in the heads, galleys, etc. All is good.

There are quite a number of dipstick and tube combinations between '57 and '64, for trucks alone, including one tube that is trim to fit. Add in passenger car, T-Bird, and trucks from '54, and you could have any combination by now.

There are also 2 capacites for oil pans in Y-Block trucks, the most common 6 quart pan, and the HD 7 quart pan. In this picture, the HD pan is at the back, standard pan in the middle and up front is the T-bird pan.
