What axles and other equipment were usually used to make a slick 4wd? When my solid front axle gets to be too much I would like to convert to 4wd rather than go to a modern suspension in the usual sense. Thanks.

Re: 4 wheel drive conversions
Just unbolt the solid front axle & replace with a 4x4 front axle
The early 4x4 trucks used the same transmission as the 2wd trucks
But had a short (18" ?) driveshaft going to the transfercase
The transfercase had its own crossmember holding it
Then driveshafts to the front & rear from it
There were no short wheelbase 4x4 trucks with a divorced transfer-case , factory.
I would suggest getting a transmission that is coupled to a transfercase out of a
66 or later 1/2 ton 4x4
The rear will need a block between the axle & leafsprings to get it level with front
Brake hose extended & longer shocks needed also (front & rear gears need to match)
Handle assembly will need to be made for inside the cab
Have to make an opening for it in the transmission hump cover
A donor truck with all the pieces will make life much simpler

Re: 4 wheel drive conversions
Thanks, that's what I was thinking, finding a donor to pull everything off of. I probably won't do the conversion any time soon, but when the time comes, it will be a fun thing to have. New Mexico has literally thousands of miles of trails to explore, and it is almost a waste not to go 4 wheeling. I have the Scout, but a 4 wheel drive Un-Uni sounds like a good way to explore them.

Re: 4 wheel drive conversions
if using a married transfer case your front drive shaft may hit your crossmember. I have done a couple conversions and this always was an issue.
