'62 Unibody LSR

Post by Mctim64 »

Hi, I'm new here so I'm still figuring out how things work.

Bigredtodd and I are starting a new Land Speed Racing truck for the E/PP class at Bonneville and El Mirage, because it is a '63 Uni we were asked to start a build thread over here.

We just picked up the truck last weekend so not much has been done yet but look out in the months to come I want to have it ready for a tech run trough in May '11.

This is what we have and my avitar shows what it will be.

Cheers, Tim[/img]

Tim: welcome.gif from Louisiana. Good to have another Y-Blocker over here. I've seen your site and there's lots of good info there.

Thanks for the welcome guys! I think Todd will be chiming in soon. He will be doing the suspension first so the project starts with him.

Hey guys, Todd here!

While this is a LSR build, hopefully the approach to lowering will be useful to you guys struggling to get your straight axle trucks down to an "acceptable" level. (oh, and it's a '62 BTW  )

Stay tuned...probably a couple weeks before a trail of pictures starts.

and welcome.gif to you also Todd. I know you from over on the HAMB. You always seem to get to the good deals before I do. :-)
Looking forward to watching and learning from your build. BTW: I would recommend you straighten that front bumper a little before you attempt a LSR. (Just kiddin)

ahhh, so you're the guy responsible for that cool fridge three gear burnout vid. man, that truck sounds sick as hell! (that's a compliment). lol/
i also see you are into b/l's finest.
i can't really talk the talk, but i did have a 63 mg migit with the 948? cc and ever exploding 4sp.
is it just me, or is "monocoque" construction bs?
also, only real sports cars have side curtains. lol

Yes. The class is PP (production pickup) so we are not allowed to change the stock chassis, modify but not change. The guy that set the record this year in a '58 chevy may have to give up the record because he has a camero ifs. I'm very suprised he passed tech since we were told specifically "No IFS" unless equiped from the factory. If you watch the incab footage of one of my runs in Charlie Burns "Yellow Brick" you can see how fun it is to steer, Todd is going to take that problem out of the Uni LSR "Jake". :D

Yeah, that's me. A '63 "Sridget" would have a 948 and yes most Brit trannys are very weak if you try to drive 'em like American cars. lol

No "bs" about Monocoque constuction, we wouldn't have some of the best airplanes if it wasn't for that.

What are the basics of what you are allowed to do and not allowed to due for the Production Pickup class?

Charlie is working on a new project of his own. He is on this build as technical advisor only, but we will always be a team. His new project will be Y-Block powered but it will suprise some when it is done. He's shootin' for 200 before he reaches 70.

The rules are too long to list so if you want to know every detail you need to get the book. The short version is that the truck needs to sty like it was from the factory but you can do what you want to the engine as long as it is the type it came with and with-in the ci for the class. E= 260ci, D=304ci, C=374ci. When we set the record in E class the next step is C class. 162 mph, I think the Uni can do it.

Here's the first installment of the lowering of Jake...not done yet, but have enough done to warrant a post. This will outline how I got from this:

To this:

Keep in mind there are a few things that you'll probably see that aren't advisable for daily use, but that's not what we're doing here. It goes without saying that if anyone has questions about what I did, or plan to do, just ask. No secrets here, and I'm happy to share.
