ID a 390

Post by bmcgc »

According to the door tag on my 76 parts truck the engine is a 360.

The PO told me that the engine in the truck is not orginial and it is a 390.

The engine has the correct oil filter housing for a truck and a cast iron 4v intake.

If the 4v intake is orginial to the engine, does that indicate a 390?

What Im asking is, was the 390 the only FE to receive a 4v, or could it be on a 352 or 360?

the only real way to know which it is is to measure the stroke.

not sure what you mean by "correct oil filter housing for a truck" as there are 2 types used in trucks the horiontal used in 2wd and the vertical used in 4x4s and big trucks, busses.

I thought all truck housings were horizonal and car housings were vertical.

I guess that blows that theory out of the water.

It doesnt matter to me if it is a 390 or not. Im selling it as a core and would like to be sure what Im advertising.

so you are attempting to be one of the few real honest sellers of an FE rather than the usual "yeah its a 390"

The 352 on the block is standard on a wide range of FE engines. Have you measured the stroke yet? don't know how accurate this is but it looks right.

Some years of the truck 390,s had a large deck height which killed the performance of the motors due to low compression.

Emissions 390 chart

The 390 truck engine of the 1970s uses the 410 piston to reduce the compression ratio. This piston often has 410 on the side of the piston near the pin boss. The chart at the right shows that this increase the deck height to 0.120. When you add a head gasket thickness of 0.042 this effectively eliminates quench and greatly reduces power. The only solution is change the pistons.

Likewise he 360 truck engine of the 1970s uses the 390 piston to reduce the compression ratio. This piston usually has 390 4V on the side of the piston near the pin boss.

If the engine is out; it's pretty easy to determine! If there is NOT a "half-moon" indention in the crank flange, it is a 3.78 or longer stroke; thus 390 or larger. If it has the half-moon it is probably a 352/360.
If it does not have the half-moon but HAS what appears to be horizontal capscrews in the skirt of the block, just send it to me!
