Test a Pertronix module

Post by Uncle Skip »

Pertronix Testing.
This post is intended for you to copy and keep in your shop notebook or share.
You might not have a Pertronix ignition now but you might in the future. I called the Tech Line and after a 19 minute wait this is what I got.
How to test a Pertronix Ignitor module:
1. Remove the module and magnetic ring that goes on the rotor shaft and put them on the bench or fender.
2. hook a jumper wire from the aluminum base of the module directly to the negative terminal of your battery.
3.Us a jumper wire to connect the red module wire to the positive terminal of the battery. *A
4. Use another jumpet to connect the red test lead from you multimeter to the red module/ jumper to the + battery post.
5. Put the multimeter to read (9) volts.
6. Connect the black module wire to the black test lead on the multimeter.
7. Rotate the round magnetic trigger close to the module like it does when its installled and watch the display on the multimeter.
8. The unit is "good" if it displays a minimum 2-3 (or more) voltage drop every time the magnetic trigger passes by the module.
9. If you don't get a drop in the voltage readout, the unit is bad.
Good luck.
