round instrument panel gauges

Post by ICEMAN6166 »

some early custom cabs, all big slicks , and early broncos had a cluster with oil pressure and gen or alt gauges instead of the lights.

big truck model, notice no tenths on the odometer.

this is the usual unit with the lights. the missing ALT tag i sold.

the back is different so you cant put the gauges in your cluster mount.

if you want to keep your existing odometer you can punch out the ALT and OIL tags. 2 screws on the back and it pulls right out. the needle does not need to come off, and yes i have removed the numbers too.

for oil pressure wiring, you need sender for gauge and then
cut off bulb and solder boot ends on wires.(or ring terminal and nut for post)

for alt or gen wiring:
take wire from alt or gen off starter relay. mount insulated junction block on fender nearby. put wire on junction block. run new 10 ga wire from junction block thru loop on back of gauge.

from the top downward otherwise it will read backwards and back to starter relay. take the bulb out of the socket and tape it up or cut it off and tape the wire ends.

An often overlooked source of things of this type is the "C" models. They were produced for about 30 years and had a lot of different options on them as they were used as Fire Trucks, by Utility Companies, and a very wide assortment of industries. There are a lot of them still in use, and Ford still can furnish a lot of stuff for them.

Great thread. Thanks for posting this one Iceman.

I think it is odd that there is two housings, I would have thought they would just have one stamping, and used an idiot light with a large backing plate to fill the opening for oil and alt/gen.

I wonder how hard it would be to neatly open those two idiot light holes up and get it to work with gauges? I got 1 or 2 spare round gauge assemblies, might play with that one.

not as simple as it would appear. the openings for the gauges are not round so you just cant pop a hole saw thru.

Yes, I saw that. Would take some very careful cutting to look right. Probably be easier to find the right metal housing.

Did they make them with a voltmeter instead of a ammeter?
