Any advice to install a windshield

Post by Brian Taylor »

I have the new seal from LMC and have a good windshield from a donor. Putting in the seal is fairly easy but for the windshield it seems a bit more a pain in the ashtray.
I was told once to put the sealant in the groove and then put a thin cord in the groove and set the glass in and start pulling the cord out to make the rubber edge pull around the front of the glass.
This is all new to me so I am asking for any advice/experience that anyone has. NOTE: I did call a glass shop that will do it for 125 but that is not in the budget of this cheap build.
Thanks Brian

I've done two windshields the same way and had good results both times.

I put silicone sealer in the glass channel of the seal, put it on the winshield and let it sit overnight.

Wrap your cord around the windshield/seal in the groove of the seal theat goes into the window opening. I wrapped mine so I could start pulling from the bottom middle - but you can place the bottom lip of the window opening into the seal groove to get it started.

It takes two people - one to hold a little pressure on the glass while another pulls the cord around the perimeter. Steady pressure on the glass and don't push on the corners too much, or they could break - especially if it is an older piece of glass - they get brittle.

Some then use sealer around the seal and the window opening. I did not do this that I can remember......

sounds like you were trying to install the seal first then the windshield?

you need to put the rubber on the glass first then put the assembled unit into the truck.

i'd recommend using 3/16 cotton "clothesline" for your cord. if the diameter of your cord gets too small (and if a rope twist type of cord...) the cord can work like a saw and chew into the rubber seal.

liquid dishwashing detergent as a lube is an old glazier's trick too.

be slow and methodical and it works like a champ. magic.

Get yourself a window paddel ,about 6 to 8 inches long made out of plasic .These help when the rope pops out before the rubber also nice to have on the rear glass. try auto parts or a glass shop for one.

The windshield is in. It went in well with little isssue other than when I had most all set it just seemed to be a bit to one side and the seal had not pulled over in a few spots. With a bit more soapy water coaxed under the seal and a lot of pressing from me and my wife and a few hits from a soft blow hammer it just settled in.
I used a piece of 10 g stranded wire instead of cord which stayed in place as I moved the windshield around and onto and into the frame.
So it proves you can teach an old dog new tricks. arf
