gas gauge problems - got gas?

Post by stronger66ratfink »

OK, I need help again! seems since I still only have two original parts on the truck, the gas gauge and the float valve in the tank, one or both has decided to stop working.
first I can turn the key on and you can see the gauge come up off dead bottom to just over E so I know I'm getting juice to the gauge? OK simple, figured the float has a pin hole or stuck? pulled it out, air dried it and held it up looking for the gas to keep coming? nope fine!, so is it the gauge? of the float contacts at the top of the tank?
want to replace both but doesn't seem that ole LMC has either, Tom! junkyard, and others help, I pull them out I'm putting new back in.
And yes went to the station again and top the tank off which is a no no in Texas if your parking it back in the garage, so I had to drive off a gallon or two after I figured out it wasn't just low.

way I check the system is take the orange wire ground it out with key on and gauge should go to full, if it does then its not the gauge,, if nothing happens then its the gauge, if gauge goes to full then the sending unit is bad orone other possibility is the little regulator behind inst. bezel can be bad as well also make sure the orange wire is not broke anywheres also

also one other thing while sending unit is out you can work it up and down with wires attached to see if it works also,,

OK, took all the great advise on how to remedy my problem, then openned the wallet and bought the new sending unit, works great now, just need to see if I need to adjust the float arm for the correct gas level to gauge ready,
66 behind the seat tanks are 17.5 gals right?

IF IT DOES not go all the way to full,, chances are that its the little regulator behind inst panel cause that will stop it from going to the full mark

I gotta try these tips as my gauge isn't working in my crewlcab. I checked it for power and it has power at the sending unit but it pulsates??
