Lowering kits

Post by willy12844 »

Do they sell front end lowering kits for my twin I-beam 65 F-100? If so do you know where and approx the cost?
Thanks,
Bill
I have a 1965 short bed step side F-100. It has a 302 V8 in it.

To properly lower a twin I beam system you need to replace the I beams with expensive dropped beams. I guess you could lower the front of the truck some by running the "rubber band" tires like the rice tuners do. I don't know if anyone has done that but IMHO they look like crap.

you can buy drop springs and have your i beams cold bent to get the camber back to right.

Good catch ezernut9mm,
I did not think of that possibility. I have looked at the front axles section in the shop manual and I guess that if someone had the right equipment that could be done.

the ibeam suspension is just not setup for lowering, especially to extreme...the suspension geometry just goes to hell the further down you go

You could swap it out for something that accepts lowering better, Crown Vic, Aerostar, etc.

ideally, it's not, but you can get two or three inches pretty easy without sacrificing any real ride quality for a daily driver.
i lowered my 68 with cut springs and flipped spring hangers and it rode and handled pretty good. i even hauled some small loads (a 223 from omaha to kansas city, and a couple loads of dirt locally) with no problems.

DJM makes drop beams for the twin I beam drop. They are not cheap, but I believe it would be the safest and they provide the correct geometry. the DJM kits are for front & rear.

lowering a twin i beam truck

Post by azratrod »

i just talked to a guy who wants 4 front spring hangers off a spare 64 frame that i have. he is going to mount them on to his 65 frame that he has stripped the original suspension of and run a solid i beam suspension instead of the twin i beam. im not sure if the hangers will fit. it will be alot of work but it might be a cool way of swithing to a single axle and then you could use a lowered axle, dearched springs with reversed eyes.

it just struck me as odd- they can drop a straight axle by heating and stretching the ends..... why cant they do that to a Twin I??? just seems kinda funky....

There is a place in the Phoenix area (their name eludes me right now) that does just that for either the straight axles or twin I-beams.
I remember finding them by searching for "drop axles".

If you are talking about Dave Mann's Roadsters.com he does NOT do twin I beam axles becasue of clearance reasons.
