does anyone have a picture of-
a 4x4 slick on 31.5" (or there abouts) tall tires?.
i'll be needing a new set of tires soon and local dealer says largest he can go on a stock looking steel wheel (16" rim) is 31.5" tall. anything bigger than that and i get into aftermarket styled wheels (16x7 rims are about the biggest available in stock steel rims). i would prefer to stay with the factory stock appearing rim but was wanting something a bit taller than a 31.5" tire and not real wide. kind of a convoluted question i guess.
any advice is welcome.
thanks

if you want to go larger try a 285 75 r 16. Its just about 33 inches tall and about 11 inches wide. Its a popular size in the jeep world since newer jeeps have a 16 inch or larger size. I have them on my Grand Cherokee. Most tire guys will mount them on a 15x7 rim. you will get some sidewall buldge but its not bad
Cheers,

I agree with Jarod. The 285 75 r16's will work on the factory wheel but will have the sidewall buldge. I looked at a set of 285 85 r16's at NTB that are usually put on the gas company trucks that do the climbing of the gas lines along with some of the AEP power company trucks. They were only about 9 inches wide and about 33 inches tall. They were not cheap and are hard to find but I found them. I am wanting something on my 4x4 that is tall and skinny. Keep looking and you will find what you are looking for. It just takes patience. someone out there will help you find the tire you want and mount it for you...

thanks everyone for the replies. looks like i have a few options out there.
how tall are the tires in your picture slick4x4? they look about the right height to me.
i like the idea of 285 70 on 16" rims and am wanting a fairly skinny tire as well, did the set you looked at anthony (at NTB) look pretty noticable in regards to the bulge to you or not to bad. the dealer told me they would bulge but i think he would put them on anyway.
are your 285 70 r16's on a 7' rim jarrod? 11" might be a little wider than i want but the height seems about right. would you be willing to post a pic?.
i'll check out the posted links and the bronco wheels as well.
thanks again i appreciate it.

We have the old school aftermarket 16.5x9.75" wide steel wheels on the truck. 38x15.5 super swampers had no clearance problems. We have a flatbead so I can't speak to the rear. It is now sitting on 12.5x16.5x37 hummer tires. The original tires were 35's . It is a highboy chassis but has no additional lift. I have a few pics in my album

after looking at your pic slick4x4 i am thinking 32's don't look to bad. guess i thought they would look kind of small on my truck but yours look good. also i have a 292 so when you say the tires are almost to much for the 223 makes me remember i better not get too big a tire or i will experience too big a loss of power.slick4x4 wrote:around 32'' tall .... almost too much for the 223....sgettin wrote:

the 37's look nice tech but i can tell they are pbly to much tire for me. what did the rims you have come off of? they have the stock apearence but i have been reading ford didn't make any that big. obviously i am not an authority on ford rims.
thanks

I don't know the brand they came on the truck when we bought it. I like the large offset that helps fill the wheel well up. It has 4.10 gears and a 460 engine so the taller tires help to keep the engine rpm down at freeway speeds. I was looking for 36" hummer tires but I found this fresh set of 37's instead. The 37's can be hard on the drive train. Shop Craigslist for what you think will look the best. then you don't have a bunch of money tied up in tires that don't look right. I bought the hummer stuff for $450 and sold the bald tires and hummer wheels for $375. The big straight 6's have lots of torque so the taller tires may be feel better at freeway speeds.
thats good advice. i never considered craigslist. one reason i am so hesitant is new tires and wheels cost a fair amount of money and once i spend it i'm stuck one way or the other.Tech wrote:I don't know the brand they came on the truck when we bought it. i am kind of wondering how big an impact increasing tire diameter will make on power. i'm not up for 37's obviuosly but 32, 33, 34 shouldn't be to bad.
anyway thanks and have fun with that 460 in there.

gonna check out early bronco rims also.
I can never make up my mind about tires either. Craigslist has given me lots of cheap options. The 38 super swampers were $50 for all four. The hummer wheels and tires were $450. The 38's were way more tire than I wanted but you can't complain about the price and my son thought that they were the coolest things ever.
