big belly steering

got the 61 uni for my Dad and he absolutely loves it. Only problem is big belly and big wheel are not compatible, not sure what to do. I have looked into the No limit power rack and pinion with power column, but have read here that this is not a good Idea. What is my best option?Steering will need to be changed because I know the belly won't. Also going with a C6 tranny so it can be either column or floor shift.

Power steering will let you use a smaller wheel.

The only option open to uyou is to go with power steering, so you can go with a smaller wheel. Several ways to do this, but none are especially cheap, as all are a major changeover. Most common would be an original changover which is still made but I forget who makes it. Cost is around 900$. All new part andyou use allthe original parts but change the wheel to a smaller on. Other boxes can be made to work , common is early 80's Toyota steering box conversion, at about 500 for kit. With this one you will either cut the steering shaft or find another column and make fit. I have also seen a conversion using a GM steering box, which hangs down below the frame, and doesn't look sanitary to me, although works well. Last , is to do a rack and pinion, which in my opinion would work well but would need some changes to the front axle to work right. Watts link or panhard bar to keep side walk to a minimum would almost be a must. You would also need a sliding steering shaft for the up and down movement of the axle. All would require some thought on how you want to go, and what combination will work for you.

There is another choice.
I cut my 63 column -shortened it - angled it up some and moved it over to the center of the instrument panel.

A couple of universal joints and some head scratchin' is all it took. I am also now running a 15" ? wheel with the manual steering.

For the time being just go with a smaller wheel and not too wider tyre on the front, only hard when going slow but drivable. Oh yeah nice son your dad has!

or look for a wheel that is flat or has less dish then the stock wheel. Many of the after market wheels will fit up with adapter kits, are larger and flat.
