Jake's Low-Tech '65

Post by azjake »

Here are a few photos of my '65 F100 that I have been working on for the last month, or so. Just got it running a few days ago (PO started installing new timing gear set, then quit...about two years ago) and took my wife to work in it this morning...40 miles round trip. It ran and drove well. Now, I need to adjust the brakes, change the tranny fluid, center the steering wheel, get new tires...

How do you like the toolbox mounted under the hood? The PO did that and I may leave it there. Kinda handy!

Greg D,

The truck is very solid with no rust and just a couple of small dents. I was surprised to see that the tailgate has no dents. This truck was owned by two brothers for over 20 years and I am very happy that I found it.

It has been an adventure getting it running and I have learned a lot since starting on it. It is very refreshing, working on this instead of the 1983 Z-28 that I just sold!

Good solid looking truck you got there Jake, looks like it only ever had hay in the back, being so straight. How`d the wife like her trip to work?

Thanks Alan! My wife loves old cars & trucks and she enjoyed the ride to work this morning. You know, I once drove home a '57 Chevy 210 2door sedan with no front end on it, just the engine & radiator in the front and no interior. I was more than a little worried when she walked outside to look it over. Imagine my relief when she stated, "You know, this car has possibilites!"

I tell people that I have a good wife, I think that she will keep me! I know that I want to keep her, but she is willing to keep me!

Update!

I now have the steering wheel been centered, steering gearbox adjusted, brakes adjusted, oil & filter changed, driver door latch adjusted, hood replaced and I started sanding on the body yesterday & even sprayed some primer on the bare metal. What fun!!!

It has been a long time since I have driven anything with a three on the tree and it sure brings back memories. I have people stopping me to ask what year my Slick is, what engine, tranny, etc. Kinda hard to get the running around done quickly, but I don't mind. I can talk old cars, trucks and/or airplanes all day long!!! (That cannot be why it takes so long, can it?)

My wife has driven it a few times and has laid claim to it. Now I need to get a/c in it before it warms up here in the Phoenix area this summer so she can drive it to work. Does anyone know where I can get a/c compressor mounting brackets for my 240 six?

I will take some photos tomorrow and post them here so you-all can see the progress.

Should be able to get all the brackets from a later truck - 240 is about the same as a 300 or 4.9. Shouldn't be too tough to adapt the stuff - you may need to change the alt mounting though. May be a good excuse add a PS pump? You already know where to get the rest of the PS stuff 73-79 F 150. If you go new enough you can get mounts for one of the smaller R134 compressors. Your biggest issue is the inside piping, ducting, etc.

Thanks, Greg! I thought that the later stuff would work, but did not know about the alt brackets may needing to be changed. It may be a good idea to find a blown 300 six with all of the accessories to cannibalize.

I am thinking about using the underdash a/c unit from an older Mustang to keep the inside cool.

Well, I ain't sayin it'll bolt right up but at least the block is dimensionally the same - may have to drill & tap a few holes, lol.
The old Stang underdash unit will be "cool", should be able to hook it up to the rest with some custom hoses & lines.

Jake,
For your compressor and brackets check with Arizona Mobile Air on west Clarendon. They have always treated me right on the parts that I've gotten from them. Or maybe APAK at 19th ave, grand & Mcdowell.

You could always be like all of the snowbirds around here. Come down for the nice weather during the winter, then head home for the summer. This way, you could work on your truck year 'round!

:hm:

Got more sanding/primering/painting done. I could be a lot farther along, but the winds & rain will not let up! You know, the rattle can paints are sure a lot better nowadays than they used to be. I am using Krylon Cherry Red and it should be a pretty good 30' truck. Photos coming tomorrow...
