I'd watch out for a deal like that. Ones like that give you half the $ then want you to drop the price, trade for a POS you don't want for the difference, or want their money back 2 months down the road when they can't come up with the difference.

I don't take "down payments" on anything I sell. I have a fear of the person backing out while others would have bought. If I want to sell something, you give me the cash and get the title at the same time. Ask yourself, would you buy something and only take half of the title and someones promise that they will give the other half of the title at a later date?

Just a couple of points: First, the price is dependent on where you are. Out here in my area, you are way over priced given the rust and general overall poor condition but I would wager that the guys in Massachussets would not agree! LOL Second, a deposit is fine, just write a contract and make it very clear that he has until a certain date to pay in full or the deposit is forfeit. Be sure to have it witnessed at the time of signing (and I don't mean your wife!). I have sold many that way and only once did I keep the deposit. Once they realize you are not giving the money back they always "find" a way to pay! Hawkrod

Price is your decision but tell the possible buyer it is all cash when purchased. If you tell him 2500 is OK but if a higher offer comes first it is first with cash.
that way you have no possible legal issues to deal with a possible lein put on your truck from the man with a deposit. It will cost more than 1000 bucks to cover time and legal cost. Trust me I had a man with the same deal and he made a $1600 68 Cougar deal turn into me making 0 dollars after the coourt and lost work due to court dates.

My two cents...Sounds to me like this guy is worried you may sell the truck for what you're asking for it. That being said, if you are willing to sell it for less I would say go for it but make sure you have all the details in writing and a witness such as Hawkrod said.

that's a great looking truck. In the north east you would get 3K in an instant.

tough call on the payment thing. I'm still owed $400 on the bronco I sold and another $1500 I'll never see because I trusted someone.. but that being said I've had plenty of deals work out.

Are you having trouble selling it? Not everyone like to be a hardnose but sometimes ya gotta. How long does he expect to be to get his return? Make him sign something to protect the two of you write a date down. and stick to it.

I have seen your truck come up in the For Sale section a couple times. It is just what i am looking for. I don't know what the market will bring in your area but if If you weren't 800 miles away I would have bought it already. Short unibodys or anything else that isn't rotted away usually bring decent money around here.
I have had bad luck with down payments to hold the truck for any length of time. After two bad experiences I dont do it any more. How long before the buyer gets his tax check? The truck hasn't sold for a while. It will still probably be there when he gets his check.
Any kind of written agreement may only be enforceable if you go to court if it is enforceable at all. Who has time or money for that??

thanks ya'll for the advice.

the guy is in the army and i tend to trust G.I.'s

i feel the price is fair and i hate haggling when buying or selling.

i'll probably tell him 3000 or not at all and i'll hold his down payment if nothing better comes along.

I have to be honest, I just spent 6 years in the Army and there are just as many dishonest people there as anywhere although I appreciate you trying to help the guy out. I wouldn't take any less then 2500. If you take the down payment though, in my opinion, you are obligated to deal with the guy. Instead of taking the down payment, I would offer to hold it for him for a specific period of time. Most people now get there taxes back online within 2 weeks or so. I agree money talks though, if someone is willing to pay 3000 let him know and make his own decision. Just my :2cents:
